Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.378

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Windows Update for BusinessNoSee the other options below.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoSee the other options above.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I don't need that either, I still have one of my machines with Safeguard Holds for 22H2, but there is no explanation on the reason for it. 🤷‍♂️

The links provided are completely useless for finding the reason of the Hold.

I wish MS gave some better explanation on the reasons for the Safeguard Holds.
It is weird that the upgrade on one of my machines worked fine on Sep 21, then when I tried again on Sept 23, they blocked it with no explanation of why. 😜

Somewhat convoluted logic on their part. I've been running the Dev, Beta, and RP flavors of this since the beginning as separate "dual boot" partitions on same hardware. If it was good enough then (still is), why is it not good enough for RTM? Hmmmmmm.

Somewhat convoluted logic on their part. I've been running the Dev, Beta, and RP flavors of this since the beginning as separate "dual boot" partitions on same hardware. If it was good enough then (still is), why is it not good enough for RTM? Hmmmmmm.
Yes, the same here. They added this safeguard block on Sept 22, due to the MS IPP Printer driver, but they don't even list it in the known issues in the MS page for the Safeguard holds. 🤐🤐🤐 No blog update nothing, just keeps the users guessing. 🤷‍♂️

Nothing blew up. :-)

I just noticed... I don't have a C:\Windows\servicing\LCU folder anymore?
I haven't seen it since I upgraded to 22H2.

No, there hasn't been one for a long time in the Insider builds. I don't recall the Beta channel 22H2 builds ever having had one....

...here's an interesting little bit of news. The 22621 Release Preview build (or Beta or Dev, come to that) no longer have any LCU folder. MS telemetry must have told them that the first thing we all do is delete it :lmao:

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. I installed this update, did the requisite reboot, cleaned the component store, and ran Disk Cleanup.
And C:\ said it was 36.6 GB, up from 35.3 GB yesterday.

Nvm... it just went back to 35.3 GB all by itself.
I swear Officer, all I've had today is a cup of tea.

"The Incredible Shrinking Update Files". :D

That would be kind of nice, if MS started cleaning up after itself. ^^

You are referring to instructions for uninstalling the LCU. That's not what Ghot and I are talking about.

We mean the the very real backup copy of the install package(s) that, in Windows 10 and Windows 11 initial release 21H2, Windows Update will store in C:\Windows\servicing\LCU. These serve no real practical purpose and can safely be deleted, releasing up to several GB of space.

Bree, my post was tongue-in-cheek. I'm well aware of what LCU is, where it is (was) stored, and it's history. My failed humor was to point out that although it appears to not be used by MS any longer, the instructions for it's removal are still published with each CU.

My failed humor was to point out that although it appears to not be used by MS any longer, the instructions for it's removal are still published with each CU.
MS, as usual, is good at sowing confusion. Those instructions are not clear, the words 'remove' and 'uninstall' are used as if they mean the same thing. When read carefully it's apparent that although the title says 'remove', following the instructions will actually uninstall the LCU.
