KB5060829 For 24H2 Screwup it installed but there seemed to be a lot of errors so I uninstalled it but that has resulted in no taskbar and a flashing desktop that’s unusable. I posted this from my iPhone.

I’ve tried the easy way of getting recovery mode but it seems not to work and the UEFI bios isn’t set to boot from a USB stick. I can’t access that either because I’ve forgotten the password. I’m well and truly messed up.
HELP!

Do you mean that you password protected your UEFI bios? Is that the password you are referring to? Unfortunately, if one sets a bios password, Microsoft does not offer a way to reset or recover these passwords, according to Microsoft Support.

Maybe you can boot from an install USB drive this way.

Well I finally got into Windows after about 45 attempts! That update is downloading and am hoping it goes smoothly this time.
I'm going to have to give that Password some serious thought. Thank you for posting,

Tip:
I would write down the password on a piece of paper (not in the computer, since the computer 'could' become unusable if you don't have that password handy), and place that paper somewhere safe, in a familiar place that you are aware of.

Also, just for your information, I noticed a typo (unless you wrote it like that) in your profile location. Just wanted to point that out :-):

Glad to hear it. If you did indeed password protect your Surface's uefi bios and can't remember it, I can only suggest your contact Surface Support.

On a desktop PC there is a special pair of contacts on the motherboard "CMOS reset" With the computer off, you short-circuit these contacts for a couple of seconds to reset BIOS settings, including deleting any passwords. If this doesn't work, you can disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes and then connect it again. For a tablet, the above are not easy to do. If you are confident enough or have a more experienced friend, you might remove the cover and then remove the BIOS battery for a couple of minutes. Of course it is safer to ask for Professional help.

Remember the movie Robocop 2 that they had added a lot of nonsense Primary Directives (basic commands) and he heard that an electric shock was the fastest way to get rid of them and return to the previous version? You could just give an electric shock to the Surface to get rid of the BIOS password... and everything else! Just kidding! :p
