KB5077181 Install Error 0x80070306 on one of my Windows 11 notebooks. (no problem with another notebook and desktop). I've tried everything I could find except a Windows recovery repair. Tried Troubleshooter, chkdsk, DISM, sfc /scannow F, and clearing the Windows softwaredistribution file. At this point, I want to take a break from it, but I want to get the Settings Windows Update screen back to normal (where it has a button for Check for updates), Right now after everything I've done, it shows Updates failed, the failed update, and a Retry button. How do I get rid get it back to normal?

This is the best way out of that error. We've done over 1,000 at my workplace since the October updates.

Edit: Specifically, I would use option 2 if you have an ISO; it's much faster than Windows Update. We run setup like this:

setup.exe /Auto Upgrade /DynamicUpdate Disable /EULA accept /Telemetry Disable

Thanks pseymour. If I don't hear of a simpler solution before I go to bed, I think I'll run an in-place update over night.

General troubleshooting steps for update failures are as follows. With what you've already done there is nothing simpler.

1. Run troubleshooter-settings-system-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-windows update-RUN.

2. Reset Windows update using Brink's tutorial Reset Windows Update in Windows 11 Tutorial

3. Open command prompt as administrator. Enter this command.
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
When complete, Restart computer

Then open command prompt as admin again and run sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair

4. CLEAN UP COMPONENT STORE - dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
Analyze and Clean Up Component Store (WinSxS folder) in Windows 11 Tutorial

5. Do a repair install. This usually works when nothing else will. Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial

I ran the in-place Windows Update yesterday afternoon. 5 1/2 hours later it was OK again. KB5077181 was gone. Maybe it's features were included in the in-place update. I don't know how things got messed up... I had done a complete new Windows 11 reinstall in December. This particular notebook is very rarely used and doesn't have many programs installed. One odd thing I do see now is Update history shows Update KB2267602 successfully installed once on 3/5, 3 times yesterday, and it installed again today when I clicked on Check for Updates.

Thanks for the help.

KB2267602 is the standard Defender update for definitions (security intelligence). The same update number is used every time there is a new release.
