Hi all,

Windows 11 Pro (Build 22621)

I'm curious if there is a way to increase the maximum thumbnail size in File Explorer to be larger than 256x256. Adjusting via the registry doesn't work beyond 256. I can use 3rd party applications such as XYplorer to view larger thumbnails but it would be great if there was a way to make them larger in the native File Explorer.

Any insights on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Perhaps you could explain why even 'extra large' is not big enough? Do you find them hard to read? Have you thought of changing the 'scale' under System..Display? I realise this will affect every app and view.

One option may be the Photos app, this lets you view thumbnails though I'm not sure of the max size, it is designed for the job of displaying images which the file explorer is not

I'm using a 4k monitor. I don't want to scale because that increases the size of everything and not all apps respond well to upscaling. I'm good with everything else at 4k but would like to have the thumbnails larger.

As you have rightly mentioned, you are limited in Windows, a third party application like IrfanView would let you manipulate the format. I am sure there are many others that can do the same.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was previously using XYplorer in Windows 10 but was hoping that Windows 11 might have opened things up a bit.

I am on 22H2 with as far as I know the latest version of Photos

To show the display I posted I chose "River" Display and "Large" size there are three sizes - Small, Medium & Large and two display modes River, as displayed and Square
The mix is quite good to give various views for selecting images

Personally I use Lightroom classic for my image management, obviously the Photos app does not have a lot of features compared to the Pro level application but it does have a better setup for image management than File Explorer

Thanks! I don't know why but the first time you mentioned the Photos App it didn't register with me. Senior moment? After this post, I went and checked it out briefly and it looks promising. Thanks!

In searching for a solution to making the thumbnails bigger, I did find a lot of complaints about this. Fortunately, I've never encountered this challenge.

Bear in mind, the version in my screenshot is the old stand alone version: v1038, the newest .exe version is quite a bit different.
