I just upgraded from Office 20121 to the latest edition of Office. I used to be able to edit an open open message in the Inbox but this functionality has been removed. Such is progress. My fix is to forward the edited message to myself.

Are you using the New Outlook or Outlook Classic? I'm a Microsoft 365 subscriber and I'm using the latest Outlook Classic Version 2602 (Build 197215.20126) and I'm having no problem creating and editing message replies.

When installing a newer version of standalone Microsoft Office and an older version is detected you are asked if you want to upgrade (aka replace) the older version or do an independent installation, in case you want to keep the old version as well. Unless the OP means upgrading from an older Microsoft Office 365 version to a newer.
