Hi All,

The keys on this laptop will stop working, but when it does, it's only the letters/numbers that stop, the arrow, backspace, tab etc continue to work fine. This seems to happen almost everytime the laptop is in use - everything will be fine, then at some point the issue will occur, then maybe 5/10 later it will be fine again.

If it was all the keys that stopped functioning, I'd wonder if maybe the ribbon cable wasn't properly seated. The fact that it is intermitten & only affects certain keys makes me wonder if it's a software issue.

But I'm not sure how to proceed?

Thanks

makes me wonder if it's a software issue.
You can prove that by using an external usb keyboard which would be one of the first troubleshooting steps to try with an issue like this.. You can also eliminate software conflicts by using clean boot.

Maybe you have to clean the keyboard with appropriate liquid and cloth or special keyboard cleaning sponge and blow dust and dirt thoroughly. Apply the liquid to the cloth or sponge, not spray directly on the keyboard! I had a similar case with one customer, once I cleaned thoroughly the keyboard all keys worked.

My wife had a laptop that started typing the wrong characters then what key was pressed. It was the keyboard itself. Luckily the keyboard was cheap and easy to replace. I did a search for a how-to video and found a video for the very same laptop as hers. Basically, it was just locating the correct locations to pry the top off so I could get to the keyboard.

In some old models replacing the keyboard is very easy. You either remove a thin plastic cover on top and remove 3-4 screws or you remove some screws at the bottom. In newer models, especially those with the keyboard underneath a plastic "grid" you must unscrew and remove half components to get to the keyboard! Is not fair...

Hi all, I've not gotten round to the steps requested above, but to add a few notes:

this is an fairly new machine, ita not dirt, dust, spills.

It has a touchscreen and the onscreen keyboard works fine.

When the keyboard issue occurs, its always then same keys that work (arrows, shift, etc). C & V work ok when copying and pasto g (i can still ctrl c and ctrl v) but do not work when just typing.

I've now ran through all the steps requested above. On this occasion, the keyboard didn't work at all from when I turned the laptop on, after about half an hour, it has randomly started working.

The keys that do/don't work are consistent when it happens - it's basically all letters/numbers that don't respond, but as noted above, they do work as I can ctrl c/v to copy/paste.

Per Lenovo's website, a lot of what you're being asked to do is the same:

However, check the laptop's cooling and see if it may be getting too warm to touch in any area, that may be causing a loose ribbon cable to (partially) lose connectivity as well. If you have the ability to affect the fans directly, ramp them up to run pretty fast, or lower the threshold for when they ramp up. If not, check your power plan(s) as well.

Is it always around 10 minutes of active use?

And is it always with every activity (say, only writing a document in Microsoft Word, or some other local only task, versus online tasks)?

No, it seems very random.

I may get an hour or more before the problem occurs, I may get 5 minutes. It may last 5 minutes or hours!

Tough one. I agree that the randomness indicates either software, or sensor of some type.

Or, it could be a hot key that the laptop is programmed with to disable those keys for some reason or other (such as gaming mode, one of the things mentioned to try disabling on the Lenovo link).

I thought it might be heat as that would be rather random as well, particularly if it were directly related to either heat from the CPU or heat from the GPU.

Is it still under warranty? If so, I'd contact Lenovo post haste.

If you have software affecting the keyboard, such as Quick Launch or similar, try uninstalling it and see if the issue persists.

I've been given some suggestions by Lenovo. They are saying if the onscreen keyboard works ok, then it's a hardware issue & to try a static discharge, if no difference to send in for repair. If it were software, they suggest resetting the laptop.

The problem seems to be less frequent & the only time it happened, it was for less than a minute. I noticed that the fan had come up either just before or just after it occurred, which could suggest a heat problem

Before replacing the keyboard, try cleaning it first. It might fix. An alternative is to connect an external keyboard. There are rubber foldable keyboards that you can fit in the laptop bag. Or you can buy a small keyboard about the same size as the laptop keyboard.

Before replacing the keyboard, try cleaning it first. It might fix.
I will try - but I am certain is not dust/dirt since it's ALL the alpha numeric keys that'll stop, but NONE of the others & those Alpa numeric keys will work fine as part of a command (eg ctrl C/V)

To use the numerical keyboard (numpad) section you must have switched Num lock on. If this is what you mean.
