Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
You're testing and you know what your getting yourself into. My concern is that a novice will want to do this and get into a big mess. Yes,, they can take to a shop but there are many areas that don't have a pc shop near them and that's the big issue

My mantra.. if it ain't broke.. don't fix it.
You're right there Jeff, with the old machine, if it never works again it will be no great loss. I used to use it for testing and tinkering before I got my second system. I guess I am lucky as we have this one I am on my main machine (system 1) my test machine (system 2) the household pc and the old one which was the test machine but not 11 compatible

That's why I recommended to clone your disk and store the original disk with Windows 10 somewhere safe, disconnected from the computer. You can then upgrade the clone to Windows 11. If anything happens, just put back the original disk to instantly return to Windows 10 and wipe the clone.

A novice would not likely know how to do this.. that's why I wouldn't recommend upgrading to 11 on a non-compliant device,

Doing that is a lot easier than jumping through hoops to install it on non-compliant hardware.

I agree with @Zardoc I can honestly say I tried windows 11 on an incompatible pc (only the i-7 failed) just to try it and it was slower than slow, back to 10 and it was fine again
What hardware specifically does your old machine have? I have Win 11 installed on both machines shown in My Computers specs (i7 6700K & i7 10700K) and see no performance difference between the two simply running the OS, opening apps, editing photos, playing Blu-rays, running the Internet, etc. Might there be a difference in gaming if I were still into that? Likely, especially as the 10700K machine has an 8GB video card, and the 6700K an 4GB card. Perhaps an i3 or i5 of the same generation will not perform as well, but this i7's performance is excellent which has given me all the more reason not to "obsolesce" it and so I'll run Win 11 on it until such time as Microsoft does something definitive to “obsolesce” it which may be never for all we know.

Yes, the average user might not know how to install Windows 11 on unsupported machines, but that's the point of this thread. To guide him step by step into doing it. So anyone interested in how to install Windows 11 no matter what machine they have, just follow our instructions. If one isn't interested, then why waste his time reading this thread? There are many other threads for those that already have a computer running Windows 11. If you rather stick with Windows 10, please visit www.tenforums.com and don't waste our time with needless criticism and useless comments. Thanks.

@wordsworth it is an i7 7700hq @2.8 I was thinking of trying it again with a newer build of 11 as the one I tried it with was back in the very early days of 11.

@wordsworth it is an i7 7700hq @2.8 I was thinking of trying it again with a newer build of 11 as the one I tried it with was back in the very early days of 11.
I'd be interested in seeing if you find the performance better with another try. The 6700K in mine does have a base of 4.0GHz and Turbo of 4.2GHz but often runs much slower since I have the Windows Power Settings at Balanced and not Performance.

I could not upgrade my Windows 10 installation to 11 no matter what I did. I even used the below code on a Command Prompt as Administrator to fix any system file errors, it didn't work. All my last attempts failed at the second boot stage. Since my Windows 10 installation is secure at my original SSD, I decided not to waste further time and do a clean installation instead. So I used my hybrid installation USB Flash drive and, at last, successfully installed Windows 11 on my main home computer. I will fill my 2nd computer specs later. To avoid losing my files I installed without format, so all my data are in the windows.old folder. I now install my applications a little at a time. If I need a fully working system in the mean time, I will just disconnect the Windows 11 SSD and connect my original SSD. All my previous drivers worked in Windows 11 without any issue. One weird glitch I saw was that in Edge there was only the Bing search engine! A Windows Update and restart later all search engines were there, so I could set the default to Google. If I have other news I will post again. Thank you all for trying to help.

Code to repair system files in Windows 10/11:

Code:
Dism.exe/online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
sfc/scannow
Dism/Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc/scannow
Running the last line you may see a message that you should restart first. Restart the computer, open a Command Prompt (aka Windows Terminal) as Administrator and execute last line again.
