Anyone using Libre Office 7.2.2 with Windows 11?
I've been using Libre Office for 20 years and never had any big problems. Other than an occasional bug with a new release. Nothing major. I use it daily.

I have been trying to set up several new spreadsheets and things are just not going well. I know that it has been verified that $MS has problems with the copy/paste (etc.), but this is just crazy.

Some of my problems:
When I open a spreadsheet to modify it and try to close it, I can not "save" it. I must "save as". It will not save it to the original folder that it came from. It either sends it to Documents or Downloads. It also saves it as an "unnamed" document, but then I lose all my original data when I rename it.

I tried uninstalling Libre Office and going back to an older version. I get the same thing. I tried to find something on the Libre Office help. Nothing there pertaining to this.

This is usually due to Controlled Folder Access (aka Ransomware Protection) blocking the save to a protected folder such as your Documents folder by an app that it doesn't know and trust. The solution is to add LibreOffice's soffice.bin to the list of apps allowed through Controlled Folder Access. If you have a notification saying it was blocked, then click on it to go to Windows Security where you can add it.

If you haven't got a notification to click on you can still add it manually. The procedure is the same as it was in Windows 10.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Bree's advice may be the answer. I just wanted to make sure you knew the following --

Are you aware you can simply SAVE from the FILE menu? And that it will do just what you required?

2021-11-07 18_17_35-.jpg

Also, once you've saved it -- if you open again and change anything, a little blue dot appears above the save (diskette) icon like so --

2021-11-07 18_20_42-freddie.ods - LibreOffice Calc.jpg

If you hover your pointer over it -- it reveals that it is a SAVE option.
2021-11-07 18_20_52-freddie.ods - LibreOffice Calc.jpg

Now you just click the diskette, the blue dot disappears, and it is saved Until you change anything else -- and then the blue dot comes back.

Hope that helps.

WPS office is stated to be the closest to the look and feel of Microsoft, and is another free option, works on most platforms including web based

Maybe taking a look may help you work more efficiently if you prefer the Microsoft way rather than that of your current option

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to help me.

Bree, I'm using BitDefender and can't find the screens you have provided. Another thought, I have never had to change anything in LibreOffice with respect to what you have pointed me to. Ever. Does this seem to be a Windows 11 problem or a LibreOffice Problem? Am I looking at the right place?

The Pool Man. I am aware of all your examples. The problem is (sometimes, but not every time) that I can not get the option to save. I only get the option to "save as". I have no idea why. And if I do "save as" it never saves it to the original folder. It sends it somewhere else and I have to hunt for an "untitled" spreadsheet. Then when I change to name back to the original and copy/paste it back to its original fold and it is blank. None of the data is there.

Thanks

Sorry to be such a pain, but none of this works. Apparently, nobody in the world has this problem, but me. I looked in the Libre Office community help. Nothing there about this. Do I really need to reinstall Win 11?

I turned off the Ransomeware Remediation in BitDefender and I turned off Macrium 8 Image Guardian.

After doing that, I click on a long-established calc spreadsheet and what opens is a blank, "untitled" spreadsheet. When I try to save it, I can't. I only get the "save as" option. Both the save icon and save function in the drop-down menu give the same result.
In addition, it is still saving it to documents or downloads folder, not the original folder. I need my 20+ years of spreadsheets. It's really too late to change to another app.
Thanks

Normally a consistent Save-AS only option would suggest that the file is read only, or that the user does not have permission to write to the file (which can also prevent the file opening properly in applications that write an "Last Opened Tag" or similar when opening

just to check this, check the file permissions and if you have difficulties try taking ownership of the file [Right Click, Properties ... Security ... and check and if needed take ownership]

Re-reading your last post, I think that you do not have access permissions set correctly on your original folder, this can happen during an update, especially a fresh install and recovery of previous data - Say you had Fred as a user name on Windows 10, and you fresh install Windows 11, and also use the name Fred, Windows will see the fred's s different users (the SID number will be different - you need to take ownership of all folders that were manually transferred between W10 and W11

I'm not sure what to think. I've been using Windows since Windows 98 and I never had something like this happen. I have done a clean install of every version that Microsoft ever put out.
If I understand you correctly, I would have to manually update permission on thousands of files/folders??
Would re-installing Win 11, fix this?
Thanks

It's a possibility only at present,

if you just have a single storage for you files it's a simple enough as there are options to change the permissions at the top level and have windows cascade down to cover all the files

The first thing to do is go to the folder above where the "problem" File is right click on the folder where the file is and take ownership of either the specific file or the whole folder

To assist with this we have a tutorial by @Brink that adds take ownership to the right click menu

I would use this on the particular file that you have an issue with, if it works to move you forward then You can proceed with your work, and then only use the right click option on files as you need to

There is a manual method, as I stated that can cascade the changes down the file tree without user help if this is the issue we can discuss that when we have found that this is the issue

Winjer, I've got an idea. Attach a spreadsheet you don't mind being public and I'll try to open it. If I can't open it, or save it, or alter it -- it may tell/confirm something the smarties in this thread suspect. They may also be able to inspect such a spreadsheet?

A similar idea is if you have another PC and that one does the same thing? Or doesn't?

If you don't have another PC but your PC has some muscle, you can install Windows Sandbox, install Libre there, and see if the file works there.

This approach might isolate if your install is corrupted or the files are.

I have LO on all my computers including my new Win11, no unusual issues.

I can remember using its predecessor back in '92 when it was Sun Micro's Star Office. It may have preceded Microsoft's Office a bit. Only thing it doesn't have is a comparable program to Publisher and Outlook.

Right, I put it on every computer I am given for salvage or parts and end up putting repaired ones in others' hands. I usually have no cost except my time, gave 4 Notebooks to Vision Beyond Borders for a mission to Honduras last month, weren't new but running Win10.

I have LO on all my computers including my new Win11, no unusual issues.

I can remember using its predecessor back in '92 when it was Sun Micro's Star Office. It may have preceded Microsoft's Office a bit. Only thing it doesn't have is a comparable program to Publisher and Outlook.
I can recommend the Affinity publisher as an alternative to MS Publisher, and Serif seem to have a permanent sale on - It can drop down to around $25 one off price - They also have a clone of Illustrator and Photoshop for around the same price - and those are not subscriptions but buy and own ...

Is Affinity Publisher better than Microsoft Publisher?
Reviewers felt that Affinity Publisher meets the needs of their business better than Microsoft Publisher. When comparing quality of ongoing product support, reviewers felt that Affinity Publisher is the preferred option.

...but you can't beat the price!:)

... and if you're like my wife who uses Spreadsheets all the time but never uses Macros -- it's a STEAL. She uses Writer and Calc daily and we pay Libre $20 once in a while. I use Writer and Impress here and there too.

I'm afraid I can't suggest a fix but can say that I use LibreOffice daily (spreadsheets) and I'm currently on version 7.2.1.2 which was the latest version a month back when I clean installed W11. Once installed I tend not to update the program unless there is a need, it will have to wait until the next clean install in a year or so all being well. All works normally and spreadsheets save to where they were last residing. I also used LibreOffice all through the developer version of W11 as well and all was good.

Thanks for all the help.
I'll have to think about this for a while. I'll see if I can pinpoint exactly what's happening before taking any drastic steps. It doesn't do it every single time. About 25% of the time.
Other times everything seems normal.
