Solved Little Bity Question on Sata Ports on My B650 Motherboard

Hello All

Think i may have mistakenly plugged into the Asmedia Sata ports? should i move it to the non Asmedia ports when i do my M.2 Switcheroo

Looks like i plugged the Sata into the last one closer to the board (Sata-A3) when i originally setup this newer Desktop on July 12th

What Asmedia ports?

You have two kinds of drive ports on your motherboard.

SATA III ports, and M.2 ports. All SATA III ports are not Asmedia.
There were "some SATA III Asmedia ports a few motherboard generations ago.

For example, my ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 has 6 SATA ports and 2 Asmedia SATA ports.

From your motherboard manual... (the SATA ports are the ones that need "cables")

The "SATA" ports in the BLUE box are Asmedia.
If you need to use some SATA ports, use the ones NOT in the BLUE box, first.
Then if you need more, use the Asmedia SATA ports.

The M.2 ports are in the RED boxes.

Also from your motherboard manual...

The non-Asmedia SATA ports are the better ones.

Well i thought Sata A3 Meant they were Asmedia chipset ports, unless im wrong, which i could be

Im not Sata port expert by any means lol. Just wanna verify that its in the proper port, if not i'll fix when i do my first dust clean out soon here

Eventually gonna add second M.2, and keep the Sata Game drive installed for extra storage lol

Don't see any info on limitations with the Sata Ports and M.2 in the manual at all, so think i should be all set adding the 2nd M.2 drive when i do in the future.

Should i leave the Sata drive plugged into it's current port, or move it to Sata 1 or Sata 2 port when i do the first system dust clean out?

To be absolutely honest, Ive never bothered worrying. I plug mine in coinciding with where they are.
Top drive on the rack I put in SATA 1 etc etc.

Yeah i somehow got it into Sata_A3, guess i wasn't paying much attention after installing the video card that day

I gotta learn to slow down, and not feel rushed with my Real Life Family making me feel rushed and slow down when i'm doing stuff, and get things properly done

As far as I know your board has 2 M2 slots.
As for the SATA, as far as I can see they all 6G ports.
I’m looking for the manual.

Yup 2 M2 Slots, and supposely all 6G Ports for Sata

Motherboard is MSI Pro B650 VC WIfi

I tend to panic, worry, and get concerned on things that aren't nothing to panic on lol, and while i'm doing a little better relaxin than i used to, i still sometimes get alot concerned when i don't need to lol

Yes, you can add a 2nd M.2 drive.

And... as I mentioned above, when using the SATA III ports, try to use the non-Asmedia ones first.
They're hooked directly to the motherboard chipset.
The Asmedia SATA III ports don't have as "direct" a connection, so they have a bit more latency.

All SATA III ports operate at 600MB/s.
But the ones hooked directly to the chipset "react" faster.

You're doing great. I wasn't upset, I just didn't understand what you were asking at first.

When building comps, it's always a good idea to plan out your drives too.
Before you start building. It's much easier that way.

You definitely want to hook the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB (game SSD), to the non-Asmedia SATA III ports.
For just plain storage... it doesn't really matter. But for gaming... use the "good ports".

Lastly, you want to locate the M.2 SSD with Windows on it... in the M.2 port closest to the CPU.
The 2nd M.2 port (the bottom one), doesn't look very far away to us.
But to an electron, it's like the distance from NY to San Fransisco.

Much More clearer now!

Will get that onto Sata_1 soon as i do the dust clean out hopefully this upcoming Tuesday or upcoming weekend depending on RL interference.

This case too heavy for me to carry too far lol, but i think i can get it to my work table that i setup, and get the dust clean out done

Did not know when i ordered this system this Lian Li Lancool 216 case was this heavy lol, but still must maintain it and have it run as smoothly as i can get it

Use the B650.
After thinking about it, I’ve always reserved the ASM for DVD players, secondary drives etc but really it shouldn’t matter.
I’ve never bought a board with less than 10 SATA ports.

Gonna try not to stress as much as i can, stressing though always been a part of my life for as long as i can remember

Though have a feeling this newer case will be easier to keep clean than my old Thermaltake V200 TG Case lol, do like the power supply filter much better on this one--instead of held on by clips like old case, this one slides out from the rear.

Thank you all for the replies and info on this matter, feel much much more relaxed now

I have a full tower case. It weighs 29 lbs., empty. (24" x 24" x 10")
I cheat. When I need to work on it, I just gently lay it down on the left side.
In other words... I don't carry it anywhere.

Well i don't know if i got room on the new desk to lay it down to work on it right here lol

I think i'd have no choice but to move it to my foldable work table, and put it on there, unless i don't setup the table legs and just place it on the table closer to the floor lol.

And make sure i touch a metal part of the case to discharge any static, though i'll have my shoes on when i do get ready to work on it

Guess i'll figure this part out more when its actually time to work on it

I'm never gonna buy a full tower again. Check the size of this beast on the right...
That's a 30" monitor.

And my computer desk is piled with junk, these days.

Yes that is a really big beast of a case

I was like i gotta get this thing upstairs on Delivery lol, then i had to install the video card (that shipped uninstalled) Table supported it fine then though.

Used to have Klipsch Speakers up til 2018 when the set died

But used it from year 1999-2018 daily lol.

Nowadays just use Headset 90 percent of the time, or Monitor speakers at times
