I received this warning in my Macrium Log this morning

Rules will be applied to all matching backup sets in the destination folder
Full: Retain full backups for 10 Weeks
Linked incremental and differential backups will also be deleted
Backup Sets: 4 sets found
Nothing to delete
Incremental: Retain incremental backups for 30 Days
The oldest incremental may be consolidated
Incremental Backups: 27 found
Consolidation: Merging '898D43DC5A0C2414-13-13.mrimg' into '898D43DC5A0C2414-09-09.mrimg'
Warning:WriteFile failed - 112
Successfully recovered from failed consolidation

And I am not sure if this means that the incremental backup was successful or whether it has failed, nor do I understand why this would happen?

The drive has 500Gb free, so lots of space available

It pretty much means what it says... a WRITE operation during the Incremental Merging failed (don't know what error 112 means), so it did another merging operation and all was well. During a failed merge, all original Incrementals remain in place until the merge is successful. Once successful, the Incrementals being merged are deleted... that's why it can easily try again.
