Logitech M171 mouse lagging after 5+ minutes of inactivity

Hello everyone,

After updating from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2, I've been experiencing very strange issues with my wireless mouse (Logi M171), which connects to my ASUS laptop via a wireless receiver plugged into a USB port. So, the problem manifests itself as follows: whenever I'm not using my laptop for about 5 or more minutes, the first time I move the mouse the pointer remains static for 1-2 seconds. This looks as if the system puts the USB dongle to sleep or something after a period of inactivity, and then it needs a few seconds to wake up. When I'm actively using my laptop, the mouse works flawlessly and responds instantly, no issues at all.

Here is what I have tried and what has NOT helped:

  • Replaced the mouse battery (tried different new batteries)
  • Played around with power management settings for USB Root Hub in the Device Manager
  • Changed cursor speed
  • Disabled enhanced pointer precision
  • Disabled the "Scroll inactive windows ..." option
  • Turned off the laptop's touch pad
  • In Device Manager, unchecked the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option for USB Input Device that corresponds to the mouse's receiver.
  • Set productivity to maximum via Windows Settings
  • Tried another brand-new mouse of the same model
  • Tried a different wireless receiver-enabled mouse (not from Logi)
  • Turned off the "USB selective suspend" setting (which was On originally)
  • Completely uninstalled USB Root Hub and USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller in Device Manager
  • Set the "disk turn off" feature to "Never" in advanced power plan settings via Control Panel
  • Disabled the feature where USB ports are turned off when the display is off
  • Disabled HDR video streaming feature in Display settings
  • Plugged the wireless mouse's USB receiver in different ports on my laptop - didn't help.
  • Checked BIOS version - it's the latest one offered through MyASUS app (V316)
  • Updated Intel Iris XE Graphics driver to the latest version (via Intel Graphics Software app)
  • Did a few tweaks on Windows Registry related to USB and device power management

I've tried so many things over the last couple of months that I might have forgotten to mention something...
Interestingly, each time I disable the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option for the relevant HID item in Control Panel, this lag doesn't seem to occur for several cycles of inactivity, up to an hour I guess, but eventually reappears.

Another important observation is that any wired mouse works perfectly well, with no lags whatsoever.

All in all, this looks to me like a power management quirk introduced in Windows 11 24H2 or one of its cumulative updates. The operating system now treats the mouse's USB receiver as a low-priority device, or such that must be put to sleep after a relatively short idle period. Unlike a wired mouse, which is identified a composite device and doesn't exhibit any such lags.

Perhaps there's some power management option, which isn't in regular settings and makes the system handle the wireless mouse's USB dongle in a specific way? Anyway, I would really appreciate any advice or thoughts on how to fix this, as I'm at my wit's end, to be honest. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I've tried the USB extension cable method - unfortunately, still no joy. Plus, I guess that if radio interference were to blame, my cordless mouse would be acting up regardless of the 5+ minutes idle system state criterion - while in my case it works flawlessly when I'm using it without a break. I think it's either a driver conflict or some "ghost" power management rule where the USB-based wireless receiver is put to sleep after several minutes of inactivity.

I was hoping a system update would fix it, but I've got at least three 24H2 cumulative updates since I noticed the bug, and it's still there. Starting to think I'm being paranoid and it was like that before, but then I say, wait, something in the mouse's behavior made me want to replace its battery several months ago - and that was clearly the lagging that started at some point and hadn't been the case earlier.
