Hi,

Early on hearing horror stories of Win 11 not running software of sorts I disabled it in the Registry here: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.

I have received notice from MS my unit qualifies.

I use HPTuners VCM Editing and Scanning Software and do not want to risk it but am lifting my head from the sand to see how things are shaking out now.
I purchased this laptop via ZTechpc, with a Clean install of W10 Pro 64 on USB and MS office Home & Student 2019 also provided at sale via KEY.

If I do it I want a clean install. What are my options and getting into if I need to revert or replace a motherboard or other scenario. What do I stand to loose or Win?

I'm happy as is but blocking updates haunts me. I just updated my profile system specs.

Check this chart, looks like your Version hits EOL next week:

As for Win11, none of my Win10 computers could properly install/run Win11, too old, so I got a new Notebook a year ago Oct. and a new Desktop in April, haven't had any issues so far. Most everything that runs on my Win10 also work the same on Win11. The biggest change outside of the meeting requirements is the x86/32-bit version does not exist, probably because of no 32-bit only computers/CPUs but Win10 and Win11 can still run 32-bit programs.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

When I took the upgrade to 11 in October last year all my software ran fine, and I have some pretty old stuff such as PaintShop Pro 7.04 dating back to 2000. If it runs in W10 then it should run in W11 too.

If I do it I want a clean install. What are my options and getting into if I need to revert or replace a motherboard or other scenario.
A motherboard change may be significant enough hardware change to loose the digital license. Linking your digital license to your Microsoft account before the hardware upgrade allows you to use the Activation Troubleshooter to restore activation.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

There are 3 possible solutions that I can think of here:

First, perform a full disk image backup prior to performing the clean install of Windows 11 that you noted you will be performing. This will ensure that if something does not work out you can very easily revert right back to where you were.

Second, you could install Win 11 alongside Win 10 so that you can test it before committing to it. Once satisfied, nuke Windows 10.

Third, you could initially perform an upgrade installation. Make sure all seems to run well on 11. If you then still prefer to perform a clean installation, you can certainly do so, but at least you will know in advance that Win 11 works on your system. By doing this, you can roll back to Windows 10 if something is not working after the upgrade. I would still suggest an image backup with this option "just in case".

I have imaged my system both Windows and a full system.

If I can ask here or get directed to the pro and con (in my case) of either a clean 11 install or upgrade? I take it an upgrade will save me from reinstalling all my programs but what is the disadvantage compared to a clean?

Thanks

Some benefits of a clean install
a) creates new default drive / partition architecture (removes extra partitions and place partitions in the optimal sequence)
b) removes unsuspected malware / spyware
c) creates the greatest amount of drive free space (removes retained / unrequired files)
d) requires that only new drivers are installed (old or inactive drivers are removed)
e) a clean install of Windows 11 does not use the upgrade assistant (Windows 11 can be installed without meeting the requirements of the upgrade assistant) (the computer user does not need to learn the methods to bypass the upgrade assistant checks)
f) requires the reinstallation of all applications (all applications are up to date)

Thanks, I just came back to say I found a good thread on the matter with lots of takes and experiences told.

In the past year in fear of 11 I have done every trick and tip I could find from services to the registry and it seems there is no stopping it. Last night it put the latest Win 10 22H2 in front of me and I thought it was a trick. Heh! I let it install.

I'm curious........... on Win 10 I made a Macrium Reflect "Windows" Backup @54.8GB, then a Full System Backup @327GB.

So if I update to Win11 and need to revert will the Win10 Full System image work?

I ask because someone suggested to BU Windows first, but did they mean the OS or full system?

Ive been a windows user of XP, 7, 8, 10 and now 11 and in my opinion the OS has finally caught up with modern looks use and placement of many aspects of the UI. I love it. I am on 21H2 public build (OS Build 22000.1281) and for me I have Zero Issues, but am calmly waiting to upgrade to 22H2 because there are WAY to many problems.

Question, a while back my PC would not sleep or stay as such. Researching I came upon info it could be there were pending updates and because I stalled them could be a part of it. I let it update and it sleeps like a baby now.

I'm having similar on this laptop. Fans run like crazy when it tries to sleep, screen goes off and they run off and on for a while but it eventually sleeps. Any truth to any of said?
Thanks,

I'm about to allow it to update to 11. I've imaged via Macrium.

Congratulations, I hope you get used to it quickly.

By default you have 10 days in which you can go back to you old Windows, after which the windows.old folder will automatically be deleted. If you want longer to think about it, then you can extend that 10 day period.

If on the other hand you have made a Macrium image of your old system then you don't need windows.old and can delete it to free up some space. This Ten Forums tutorial tells you how, it is equally applicable to Windows 11.

Well, I have to be honest and will seem like an old curmudgeon but I find it horrible. I'm sure I can appreciate whats changed under the hood but....

The good news is my laptop sleeps like a baby now. So if your PC or Laptop screen shuts off but she never sleeps and fans continue to cycle check for updates. Its just one possibility. I had registry and policy edits in place to stop the updates. Even with this I have had the machine restart into 11 before. I backed out without a look. Stubborn.

Thanks the powers that be for Classic Shell. I have used it for decades but not on Win10 because I was able to make it work comfortably for me.
This 11 seems like a teenager or younger designed it. Some of the changes come off as just for the sake of changing something or making it more difficult or uncomfortable or for the sake of being different. Or look pretty in a boardroom meeting selling it to the executives.

The recommended pane is an insult to anyone other than a first time computer user. And disabling the content with leaving the empty pane is adding insult to injury. Seems to be a trend with the likes of Prime & Netflix being mind readers with "Because you a documentary" here is a thousand you may like to see. Sorry but I like a wider variety than that.
Wide spacing in file manager? Heh! Boy was I relieved to see another choice.

Anyway...... I don't want to burden here with a bucket of tears. I'll be OK and am VERY grateful for these forums. I have been on, and benefited tons from all of the OS forums like this one by the responses and tutorials over the years.

I'm not gonna give up on it though.

You can reduce Recommended down to just one line. I let mine show my recently opened documents and recently installed apps, that can be of some use.

Thanks,

I'll get over it I'm sure.

I use More Pins and have Show Recently Added vs Installed, same thing I guess, and don't have a specific Documents choice, its Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer.
