Hi folks

I've a load of music in M4A format -- however still have some "Dinosaur" colleagues who want some physixal Audio CD's for their cars -- anyway to do this. (Why on earth they would want CD's especially on bumpy roads etc -- well no accounting for taste). --Personally I find storing M4A on a mobile phone and playing it using VLC and Blu tooth through the cars entertainment system just works fine (or even via AUX in on a car dashboard) but you can't change some people !!!.

FLAC and other lossless formats -- no problem but M4A etc is roughly (but better usually) than 320 and certainly 256 kps mp3 so what's the point !!!..

Cheers

Hi there

Thanks for the reply : BUT :

I think you've mis-understood the problem -- : I.E it's NOT ripping a CD to various formats --it's CREATING an MP3 Audio CD from various M4A files !!!! -- Big difference !!!

I've "Partially" solved it by loading up an XP VM with an old version of NERO on it where I can create an Audio project with a load of audio files of all sorts of formats (you need the old NERO mega plugin-pack) , load up Alcohol 125% to "load a Virtual NERO CD nrg device " and burn to a physical CD -- but that's seems a long winded and overtly complex way of doing it. !!!

I was looking for a simpler W11 (or even W10) way of doing it.

Cheers
jimbo

FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.M4A output.mp3

FFmpeg is the leading multimedia framework, able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play pretty much anything that humans and machines have created. It supports the most obscure ancient formats up to the cutting edge. No matter if they were designed by some standards committee, the community or a corporation.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
The Audacity Home will do the trick, you can import and export as mp3 format.

FFmpeg import/export library – Allows Audacity to import and export many additional audio formats such as AC3, AMR(NB), M4A and WMA, and to import audio from video files.

"Free to air" just means you are not paying a fee to receive the sound. That is completely different to copyright.

You would have to check with the BBC if those radio broadcasts were copyright free.

In UK, we do not have a "fair use" clause like the US whereby (I believe) you are allowed to record copyrighted music for personal use.

However people have been copying copyright radio broadcasts since tape recorders came out, so the UK government turns a blind eye to recording it for personal use. However, if you were to use those recordings for commercial gains, that is not permitted.

Regard m4a to mp3 - dozens of tools that will convert. VLC will do it.
