Hi there
Have been unable to clone an SSD to a larger HDD (have an older computer I want to install the HDD in).

Macrium 7 Free fails

Linux DD clones the disk OK so it's not the hardware !!!!!

Cheers

I just make a disk backup, then "restore" to where ever.
I've never used clone.

If you just want the OS... then make a backup of that, and restore it to the new drive.

Hi there
Do-able bit it's a faffle -- you then need another device (you can't restore an image from the same device that is being restored). Obviously for what I just wanted to do was just to copy / clone the wretched Disk !!!! My point though was not that I couldn't complete that task one way or another but that a piece of software wasn't working properly !!! (There wasn't enough spare space to create the image on the "C" disk itself so I really would need another device if using imaging rather than cloning in this case).

Here's the DD console at approx 50% complete - it takes longer than macrium but it works. Macriium failed at approx 15% the way through the task.

I might have a go with another test using V8 trial !!! and see what happens.

But for those who know Linux I've never had DD fail on cloning - although it can take longer (usually does) unless there really is something wrong with the hardware !!!!. It's also a fuss messing around with 2 computers and 2 different OS'es to do this -- in the past I've been able to clone from SSD->HDD and the other way around without any problems using Macrium V7 on W10..

Cheers

I take it you’ve done the usual - disable anti virus software, run chkdsk etc?
Have you tried cloning from the Macrium recovery media?
Try sfc & DISM In case of file problem/s.

Thanks
I've created the clone via DD and installed in target machine -- all working OK now. I'll test with the same SSD and another HDD later with the V8 Free trial. Most people don't normally clone from SSD->HDD but I've got a reasonable 2TB HDD and the SSD was a 512GB one so that was the logic of using that -- the extra space on the HDD will be used for video recordings, downloads of SKY/NETFLIX type programs etc where disk HDD speed isn't of first order of importance (assuming disks reasonably OK in ist place).
