Windows 11
I will be taking on the task of replacing my NVMe M.2 ssd and using Macrium .
not sure about Image or cloning yet.
Should buy a USB flash drive dedicated for the OS Win.11 and apps.
I do have two external HD that have 300-350GB freespace (each) but obviously other stuff on them.
My C: drive currently is at 103GB.
Do I have to prep or format, partition ? those in anyway ?

Macrium should setup the new drive just like the old drive. If the new drive is larger than the old drive you will have some unallocated space. You can use this space to increase the C: partition. You can do it with the paid version of Macrium, Disk Management or another third party partition program.

Please take your time with this - as an imaging newcomer you will have numerous opportunities to get it wrong and then find yourself facing a very difficult situation. The two absolute essentials are to create and test the rescue media and to create and validate an image of your present system. The rescue media is how you will boot your system after removing your existing SSD and the tool you will be using to restore the image of your system to the new SSD, so absolutely fundamental to your task.

Although THIS is for version 7 I recommend you to study it carefully before you start as it also applies to the current version 8.

No preparation of those USB drives is needed. When you make your Macrium Disk Image just direct Macrium to use the USB drive as the location for the image file. 103Gb of content will come out as a compressed smaller image file by default.

It might help if you post a screen shot of your drive setup. If you type the words create and format into Windows search box it will bring up the Disk Management App. Open it and post a picture. We can see exactly what you have then. This shows two internal drives.

Excellent advice. Although it's not the end of the world if your recovery media doesn't work (you just quickly install W10 or W11 and reinstall Macrium and then restore your image) it is a complication to avoid. So do check that you know how to boot into the rescue media and how to use it.

As long as you have a valid disk image file you will be able to restore it.

Now we know what it is you are really trying to do there are easy ways to improve the space situation on your C drive without moving Windows and Apps at all. A typical Windows installation with apps doesn't usually exceed about 60 Gb so your 103Gb has a lot of other stuff on it, probably your Docs, Music, Pics etc folders. Start by downloading and installing Treesize Free. That will show you what this other stuff is. Post a legible screen shot and someone here will help you relocate it.

I see Disk 1 has a 'Recovery Partition' which I assume is a manufacturer provided recovery option to take it all back to day one out of the box state. I'm not sure how well those things respond to being imaged and restored, particularly to a larger drive. It may be fine, but I don't know for sure. Acronis used to 'break' that option years ago by writing a non standard MBR back in the day and that rendered the recovery partitions useless.

You also have to ask 'do I really need it' because would you really want to go back to how it was on day one. I certainly wouldn't.

If replacing Disk 1 with a larger drive is the intention, then I would think all you need do is make a Macrium image... actually let's make that two images, one of the default Macrium option of 'Partitions to restore Windows' and another of all the partitions where you select all to be imaged. That gives you two restore scenarios, a slimmed down Windows and also a copy of the drive as it is.

Remember if you replace the drive you still have that original drive to put back if you had any bizarre error or need to go back to how it was.

So I would make two images and plonk them on that empty second drive I see. Having done that you can copy the images to another external drive so you have double insurance of copies of the image files.

Make your bootable flash drive using the Macrium instructions. It's only a couple to clicks to do that. Then test the bootable media by setting your PC to boot from the flash drive and you should then be able to see and browse for the disk image files you made. If you are happy with that then swap your drive, boot from the flash drive and restore the image file to the new drive.

It sounds complicated but it's not really.

sorry for misleading language...
I Do want to change to a 500GB NVMe ssd.
And use Macrium.
My reply in #5 was I thought moving different apps, folders, one drive , whatever seemed complicated to me.
Recently started having downloads go to E: , if I have a choice.
To be honest , today was my first day using Edge's screenshot.
Also , sorry for late replies, had grandchildren today .
I would like to try and move that One drive just so I can learn.
thanks again

If you find all this interesting then another option for you to try is this. You could do all that has been suggested and also then have a play with a totally clean fresh Windows install on your new drive. Make your disk images and get those safely stored out of the way. Once you have those you can try anything out. You might be surprised how 'small' a clean install can be.

As to moving apps and so on around... what you don't want to do is have interdependent apps and data on different drives where there is a possibility you might make a disk image of one and restore it. For example if you have your index on one drive and the data on another and you restore back to an image made days or weeks earlier then the two will not match up. My experience is its best to keep such things all on one drive (the C drive with the OS).

@LIZZRD might find this interesting as it shows the size of a typical W11 install.

This shows W11 clean installed and fully updated to the latest build on the C drive and the corresponding sized Macrium image of that. No user files or programs have been added at this point (apart from Macrium). The Macrium image takes up much less space than the original because it compressed by default by Macrium.
