Solved Macrium Reflect Charge...

For those here that have paid for a license for MR, what has been the cost to get a version update? I understand that the $69.99 fee is forever for the version you paid for, and you need to " buy" any updates you want, but the MR website doesn't go into any detail about update costs. I chatted with someone named Will at MR who said version updates would be $15-20 which sounded sort of vague, but I wanted to hear it from those with experience.

"Minor version upgrades" means if you're on say... 8.0, then all the 8.x upgrades are free.
Now if Macrium moves to version 9.0 ( a major version upgrade), and you want to also move to version 9.x, then that would cost money.

I bought my Reflect when it was v7.0. For that licence fee you get a perpetual licence for v7, and free updates to all v7 versions. By the time v8 was released I had been updated to v7.3.

The price of a v8.0 licence was about the same as it had been for v7. Anyone who had purchased v7 within 6 month of the release of v8 was entitled to a free v8 upgrade. For those of use who had purchased it before that, a v8 upgrade was offered at a 50% discount.

All the updates are free for the supported life of the version purchased. v8 will be in extended support for one year after the release of v9. At the end of extended support there will be no further updates, but your Reflect licence is perpetual, you can continue using v8 forever - or until MS make a change in Windows that stops it working. That has only happened once with Windows 10 version 1903. Macrium released a patch for v6 at that time, even though its extended support had officially ended over a year before.

The only thing that ends a year after purchase is free Technical Support. That's not a great loss though, your licence allows you to register to post on the Macrium Forum and ask for help there, and that registration is perpetual.

But you can still use v8.1 without support, it is not a subscription.

I get that, but I was wondering what the cost has been for moving to a new version? I'm at v.8.0.7272 now.

I dunno. As mentioned above, the prices can change radically.
Macrium has sales and comes up with "deals", all the time.

Personally, I think they'd do more business, if they had a lower and stabler price.

I paid for version 8, and I'm happy with version 8.0.6635.
I updated to version 8.0.7xxx, didn't like the change in backup and restore speeds, so restored to 8.0.6635

I have approx. 30 GB on my Windows drive. I can do a backup in 2:20 and a restore in 1:30, at default compression.
And that's NOT using Rapid Delta Restore.

As I mentioned to Will @ MB, I would hope for smaller yearly subscription cost, like some other applications.

I feel the same way. With their regular cost and the numerous deals they do during the year, they could sell MR for about $40 and still come out even.

I've been using Macrium Reflect since version 4.2.3775, and as far as I can remember, I've received major upgrade discounts.
I think I may missed out on a major upgrade discount once. I can't think of the reason why now.

I bought a 4-pack of v7.0 at a UK price of £47.47 in November 2019 in their Black Friday 50% sale. Reflect v8.0 was released in May 2021. I bought the 4-pack v7 to v8 upgrade at £50.95, the upgrade offer was at a 50% discount to the price of a new 4-pack v8 licence.

I expect when v9 is released a similar 50% discount will be offered to upgrade from v8. I'd expect the v9 price to be similar to the v8 price, as v8 was to v7.

So 50% discount for a single home edition update is $35 US. I like Will's $15-20 cost better, but I guess I would pay $35 a year to continue a license and get all updates, both security and version.

I think they have a dart board with different prices all over.
When someone asks for a discount they toss a dart and wherever it lands, that's the discount you get.

When I bought my v8 upgrade in May 2021 I got v8.0.5903 installed. There is no annual subscription, it's a one-time payment that entitles you to all future v8.x.xxxx updates for free. I got all the subsequent updates and am now on the latest version, v8.1.7401.

It is not $35 per year with the discount (V9.0). Major upgrades are approximately every 4 years or so, so the net cost with discount is less than $9 per annum.

The 4 licence pack is even more value if bought on Black Friday (4 licences for 4 year @ $70 one off fee - i.e. $4 per licence per year

Of course, no guarantee a 50% off licence will be guaranteed.

Why don't they do a 2-pack licence for (say) £70?

I have two devices and currently I would have to buy a 4-Licence pack for £102 and waste £32 (If a 2-Pack existed at £70)?

I am sure I am not the only person that this applies to. I reckon they would sell more licences if a 2-pack was offered.

Ah! That's what l was looking for. That's very affordable. My $35/yr. was just a personal threshold assuming a new version every year. If major updates are usually that far apart, that changes the perspective a bunch.

Just because a new version is released doesn't mean you have to upgrade to it. Your licence is perpetual, you can continue using it forever, or until there's a Windows OS change that stops it working. The last time that happened was W10 1903, v6 and v7 got patched, v5 didn't.

Versions v6 and v7 still work to this day, in fact I still have Reflect Free v7.1 running on one of my machines.
