I’ve been using Window’s built in system imaging and I’ve always been pleased with it’s simple interface and reliability, but since MS is threatening to end that program at some unknown time, I’ve been forced to consider other options.
Decided to try Macrium Reflect despite looking like some fairly complicated software. I Have 3 laptops of which the oldest is a pretty decent computer but it’s W10 and for some reason it doesn’t qualify for W11, so I used this one for the guinea pig to experiment with to see if I could figure out how to run the software.

After studying the User Guide a couple days along with 2 failed attempts, I finally succeeded in creating a full image and restoring it!! YES!
Only bad thing is the cost for 3 computers. I’ll probably just let this free trial issue time itself out and then buy the software for the other two computers. Don’t really need it as much on this W10 unit anyway.
Just glad I figured out how to run Macrium Reflect.

I think Macrium is arguably one of the best imaging software out there. I’ve done more than a hundred restores and it always worked perfectly. I agree the interface is a bit daunting at first, but in practice the most typical operations are easy to perform. What I particularly like about it, are the fast incremental backups (usually 30 seconds) and fast restores as well (about 3 minutes). I also think the price is a bit steep, I have a paid license on my Win11 machine, and a free version for my Win10’s one.

I'm counting on that. And "daunting" yes, but I took notes LOL. Once I got through it, now it doesn't seem so bad. (y)

If Paramount do the annual Black Friday deal at 50% off, you can buy a 4 licence pack at 50% off as well. A 4 licence pack is half price any way i.e. you get 4 licences for price of two.

On Black Friday, you could thus get 4 licences for the price of 1.

Many of us here have taken up this offer!

If you install in vhdx files and simply save the vhdx files to backup there's no need any more with needing system backups -- especially if you ensure the windows systems only have windows etc and user data is stored elsewhere or in other partitions.

A typical Windows system might only be 35 GB -- OK an image might be 18 GB but these days with massive amounts of storage it's not an issue. Backing up and archiving data is another issue -- but I'm seeing the value of system backups by classic software as less and less important -- and especially as stuff that's really important -- store on the cloud -- cheap enough these days.

My view is that for some of these 3rd party paid up solutions are going to go the same way as most AV software is these days. Was very important previously but there's better (IMO) ways of handling this now especially on home computers. Commercial large sacle businesses and SME's of course need different solutions.

Even if you don't run a load of systems - just have 2 vhdx files --one BEFORE any system change and one for the AFTER. So if something goes bonkers - simply boot into the old vhdx file and replicate it to a new file -- works even with file explorer. !!! If you just need to recover a file from the previous install -- just attach the vhdx and copy the relevant files.

Archiving and backing up user data data, music, video, photos etc is another issue -- I'm only concerned here with the OS itself.

Also for small windows installs using the dism /Apply-Image method bypasses the W11 requirement that there must be a minimum of 48GB on disk.

Cheers
jimbo

Well, I would create a non-dynamic disk and it would be larger, say 100GB. Having multiple backup copies of the .vhdx would certainly chew up a bunch of disk space. I guess I would still rather have image based backups that are significantly smaller. But I can see where you are going with the logic here.

To the OP, while I am not suggesting this rather than licensing, if you buy 1 copy and create the rescue media, there is really nothing that prevents you from booting from the rescue media and then running an image to an external hard drive from any other computer. It's not in the spirit of the license, but it's technically doable.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Thank you @cereberus for this useful information. I'm aware of black Fridays' great deals, but in my case I already have a paid license for my personal machine, I hardly use my other machine. I should also add that in the past I used 2 machines almost simultaneously, and found the experience time consuming in terms of maintenance (updates, redundancy, backups, etc.). Nowadays I prefer to use only one computer, it makes life easier for me.

Some of us are gluttons for punishment :lmao:

Typically I'm updating then backing up nine laptops each Patch Tuesday. I have a 4-pack of Macrium licences and use Reflect Free for all the others.

(I hate Patch Tuesday)

You probably have a very good reason to manage so many computers, I hope it’s not a big family!:D
