I use Malwarebytes Premium and I do not have it registered in the security center; Windows Defender is my primary antivirus/malware software. It seems to work well that way.

Hi,
I use register otherwise you have defender and mbam messing with stuff where as mbam pro/ premium is best.
Defender even periodic scanning is unnecessarily.

Hello rezpower,

I too. use MalwareBytes Premium, I do not have it registered in the security center. Windows Security, is my first line.

Never an issue.

EDIT

i should add, I use Win 10, not 11. If that makes any difference, which I doubt.

There's a real benefit to not registering MBAM Premium in the SC, and that comes from the fact that Defender will still run in real time while MBAM Prem is running in real time, and they handle very different things with only partial overlap. They aren't in conflict with each other, but they complement each other. I have checked on this several times by downloading dicey software: Defender will grab it immediately before it can run, and then if I register it as an allowed threat in Defender and try again to run it, MBAM grabs it before it can run. Similarly, I get Web site warnings for questionable sites, sometimes from MBAM and sometimes from WD.

Hi there

@rezpower

I'm not sure if this software (at least on HOME computers) is worth having any more. The basic WD these days has a similar algorithm and Engine to Ms's extremely highly regarded AZURE cloud server security which now has its security rated as "Military Strength". If it's good enough for CIA, NSA, MOSSAD etc I don't have any problems with WD !!! Your biggest issue these days on HOME ( I emphasize HOME, not Office / enterprise LAN type systems) comes from scams and identity theft and frauds. "Old School Hacks" are rather passe these days -- much more money to be made in identity thefts etc -- especially with the amount of info people freely give out on social media sites.

If you still want this type of software for "peace of mind" -- then that's your decision and doesn't depend on a "technical argument" - but as a technical issue it's a waste of time on a home computer.

Cheers
jimbo

Thanks guys, I now know that many of you have them both running together with no problem. So this is what I am going to try.
I have had bitdefender total security + Malwarebytes for many years. Since windows 11 I stopped using bitdefender and have only MB installed.
I hope that this is enough !

I have not registered it with W10 or W11 security. Better that MBAM does it's own scanning and Defender does it's own scanning, they IMHO should not have any interaction.

Just remember that during an upgrade or a new purchase you are offered VPN and a Browser Guard. NO need for either of those. MBAM by itself is excellent protection and will block a page from loading if it's suspicious.

Hi,
Not sure why anyone one would pay for mbam premium and not have it register with windows

Might as well save money and use the free version.

The term register is misleading in this case. If it's registered with Defender, Defender gets turned off leaving only MWB running in real time. If it's unregistered both MWB and Defender run in real time. Since the 2 programs offer protection differently, I run Defender and MWB side by side since they play well together. It's the real time protection from MWB that is important to me. On my backup computer I just use the free version and manually scan whenever I'm using it.

I used to use the pro version (lifetime licence) but found it used resources unnecessarily as Defender is good enough for me. Still have it installed as the free version if needed but hardly used. I use the MBAM browser guard extension.

A little late to the party, but the way I have it set up, is Malwarebytes Premium is registered with Defender, but I also have Defender set to auto-scan once in a while anyway. I also use the MB extension that does great catching sketchy websites.

Hi,
Term is pretty straight forward
And disabling defender is exactly what I want

I don't use defender periodic scanning either
I also go as far as using this to remove defender

Code:
rem Disable Windows Defender. For this to work you have to manually disable "Tamper protection"

Hi,
Not sure why anyone one would pay for mbam premium and not have it register with windows

Might as well save money and use the free version.

Free version does not constantly monitor your system. You have to manually scan whenever you get around to it.

Registering, which makes MBAM the main security app on the system, is fine. I like having both Defender and MBAM working in tandem because they have no conflicts with each other.

I may well be wrong, but I got the impression that if Malwarebytes was registered, it suppressed the working of WD.

Click on the "Windows Security" icon in the system tray, click on "Virus & threat protection" and you'll see the info for Malwarebytes is running, below that you'll see "Microsoft Defender Antivirus options" and you can click that and turn on Defender to still scan while Malwarebytes controls stuff.

Hi,
Term is pretty straight forward
And disabling defender is exactly what I want

I don't use defender periodic scanning either
I also go as far as using this to remove defender

Code:
rem Disable Windows Defender. For this to work you have to manually disable "Tamper protection"
powershell "if ((Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Features').TamperProtection -eq 4) { exit 0; } ; Write-Output 'Windows Defender can not be disabled, Tamper Protection is still active' '' 'Disable Tamper Protection manually, then press OK' | msg /w *"
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Spynet" /v SpyNetReporting /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Spynet" /v SubmitSamplesConsent /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender" /v DisableAntiSpyware /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Real-Time Protection" /v DisableRealtimeMonitoring /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer" /v SmartScreenEnabled /t REG_SZ /d "Off" /f
reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender" /v DisableRoutinelyTakingAction /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v SecurityHealth /f
I don't understand why someone would install Windows and then disable Defender.

Having said that, The 2 programs are different as to what they scan for. Malwarebytes does not scan for traditional viruses but concentrates on other forms of malware. It also deletes definitions for older threats it deems to be not a danger any more. This has been attested to by the MBAM team. Defender scans for viruses as well as some of the other threats and keeps older threat detection for a longer period of time. It does an excellent job by itself but having something else run along with it (which I didn't know was possible) is not a bad thing. Personally I use it as the front line protection and do occasional scans with the free Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes will sometimes detect things like spyware and trackers which are not strictly classified as malicious so Defender lets them through. They don't hurt anything but they can build up and slow down the system. It's always a good idea to have more than one scanner because they will have different definition sets and different detection algorithms.
