Microsoft apparently hates it when you switch from Microsoft Account to Local account

MS is becoming more and more a user hostile dictatorship.
Sadly, it makes users themselves increasingly hostile.

coming back to Windows 11 from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS i had forgotten how hard you have to fight the system to get it to work the way 'you' wanted it to. MS seem to put as many obstacles in the way as possible and you have to learn a whole new set of rules to bend the system to your will.
apart from that i am quite enjoying Windows 11 but i do wonder what MS's next trick will be ..

Chapter & Verse please -- While Ms would prefer people to use a Ms account there's still no problem whatsoever with using a local account -- at least on editions of Windows that aren't the Home edition.

Simply if installing system from scratch select the work or school computer, sign in options, join a domain -- and then it goes normally with a local account,

There might be some limitations on using a local account e.g you might not be able to install store apps (can't be bothered with those anyway) or some features say of Ms Office only work from within an Ms account. Seems OK to me --Where's the "Evil empire" bit about all of this.

Seems many people are just getting too paranoid these days or seeing hidden conspiraces around every corner. Just remember the prime function for any private business is to make money for its owners, employees and shareholders.

At least the Ms ecosphere isn't so horribly restricted like Cr(Apple)'s one.

Linux though (and it's my main daily system) needs a bit of work to get it to run exactly as you want it -- especially with some of those "automated installs" (That's why I like ArchLinux - you can do the whole thing manually - probably not recommended for beginners though) -- -- however Windows for most people is just turn on the computer and it works, They don't give 2 hoots what's inside etc.

Once you start getting inside Windows and want to tinker then yes it's a problem --but remember Windows is a proprietary closed source OS --Linux and pretty well most non corporate applications for it are all open source and by compiling you can really customize your system to run about as perfect as possible. Windows isn't like that -- imagine the problems if people had to compile applications for windows just to install anything.

Linux is what you make it even with Ubuntu. i used Ubuntu since 10.04 but snaps and the restrictions on .debs was a step to far.
my wife's system is running Win 11 and she hasn't had any major problems. well none that i cant fix.
but there are certain things i dont except whether its MS or Linux or Apple thats not allow me, as the user, the choice.
if the software they want you to use is that good they would not need to push it to the extent that you as the user cant remove it.
when that happens i have an awkward habit of trying to find out why.

i put it down to being stubborn and i also like the challenge. so far i have Win 11 working my way and thats they way i would like it to stay.

somewhere along the line, we paid for the privilege of using your operating system, we shall abide by the EULA..., other than that, leave us alone!
As one of the comments suggested:
"I shouldn't have to log into the dealership every time I start my car!" (although, that seems to be changing as well!)

Hi there
Try ArchLinux - it's based on debian so you should be able to use it easily enough as a former ubuntu user.

You don't need snaps, flatpak, containers, kubernetes etc etc. If you want a GUI plenty to choose from -- I installed the base KDE plasma (without the applications as I install those individually -- I don't need things like libre office and a load of other default apps either. Just ensure you have a konsole, nano, a graphical file manager (dolphin) , Network manager and a browser - then you can have a really lean and mean workstation desktopdesktop. I use the GUI since I run a load of VM's on KVM/QEMU and it's much easier using the GUI virtual machine manager !!!!.

I'm also running a NAS using ArchLinux - again with a minimal KDE desktop. For backup of Windows and other client machines Grsync (GUI front end for rsync) is IMO streets ahead of a load of other FREE data backup things. If using a NAS SAMBA works well for file sharing and I'd suggest gparted as a partition manager.

I gave up on Ubuntu when they "went into bed" with canonical. Fedora is also okay-ish -- vastly improved now IBM has taken over RedHat -- but a lot harder to "customise" individually than Arch.

With Leased cars maybe that's not a bad idea since it would reduce opportunistic car thefts hugely. Leased cars tend to be higher end stuff that's also "Stolen to order".

If you had to logon to the dealer and enter some random pass key before the car would start it would put 90% of those people using hardware devices to capture key fob code etc out of business.

Car crime is minimal here but in some places it's endemic with cars ending up in Russia etc.

i have LMDE running in VirtualBox and runs very nicely from a live USB drive.
but, and theres is a but, i cant get the B&O speakers on my wife's system to play anything, no sound, none.
its the 2nd system in my computer spec.

i have tried re-jacking Alsa then pipewire but no luck but will keep looking
if and when i get that sorted Linux Mint Debian Edition will be installed on both systems
far easier to keep the systems updated when they are both using the same OS, hence Win 11 on both at this time.

again, a but .. i will play with Win 11 even up to point i bust it as i have my SSD partitioned
250GB for Windows .. 750GB for Home and have Windows backed up so just have to clone it back.

I know this is off topic but what surprises me is the fact that auto makers are allowed to make driving cars very distracting to operate the controls. For example: one shouldn't have to scroll through a touch screen menu just to set the climate control. My son works for a company that inspects used cars and writes up the paper you see in the window and takes the pictures of the cars the dealers post on the internet. Some of the cars he does is almost like rocket science. A few of the cars he had to use Google to find out how to find the screens he needed. IMHO, distractions caused by the misuse of cell phones is bad enough.

I'm starting to get the impression that NeoWin might be a bit petty with their criticisms

I read an article that stated Microsoft was going to visit every Windows user on the planet and ask them how they believe Microsoft should make Windows, then tailor a new version for every individual user.

Sounds like a plan. They might even be able to do it by the beginning of the 22nd century. Maybe.

Can you please clarify this statement? It doesn't make any sense as written. For example, Arch's pacman and Debian's apt package managers could not be more different.

They came to my house yesterday. They said I should receive my Custom Windows in 3 to 4 weeks by email.

When it comes to MS giving us Windows the way we want it I think we should remember what Henry Ford said about the Ford automobile. You can have it in any color you want as long as it's black. For MS it's, you can have Windows anyway you want as long as it's our way.

Switched my new laptop with windows 11 over to a local account today!
