Microsoft doubles down on its strategy to get more Windows 11 users on Microsoft Edge

  • Staff
Microsoft has been adding new ways in Windows 11 to try to get more users to go with its Edge browser. Earlier this year, it changed the way users could set their default browsers, adding a bunch of new steps that required them to switch a number of settings manually in order to switch away from Edge. Last week, the company took another step by locking the Edge-specific protocol that enabled users to redirect programs to other Web browsers.

If you want a thorough explanation of what changed regarding the Edge protocol, I'd recommend this post from ghacks.net. In short, Microsoft blocked tools like Edge Deflector and Search Deflector, which were designed to make selecting a browser other than Edge more of a straightforward process.

Microsoft didn't do this by accident, and officials made it clear they aren't considering relenting on this. In last week's Windows 11 Dev Channel test build notes, there's a line that acknowledges its latest move. It simply says: "We fixed an issue where OS functionality could be improperly redirected when microsoft-edge: links are invoked."

I asked for a statement about whether the company intends to try to make switching to a browser other than Edge as difficult as possible with Windows 11. Please keep in mind; I am just the messenger here. A spokesperson sent the following:

Yeah... and they never will. That's why boards like this are so important to folks who want to have as much control over their computing experience as possible. What chaps me the most is regular Joe Blow users who don't know any different have to accept it.

If you using an email client such as Thunderbird or any other ,it will go to the NET on your Default Browser . If I click on a link in My Client that will say go to Amazon, if I have EDGE set it will go there but without any log in details. I use long Passwords and I can't take the time to look them up. Besides that I don't like EDGE and I am wondering why IE is leaving leftovers as I thought MS was dumping it completely.

If they block it, I will install and Dual boot with Linux and use it for the Net. MS should be broken up just like AT&T was as they are becoming a monopoly and I am tireing of the way they use people and conduct Business..

I think the news is just that MS is going to block that process. No word yet on what happens to systems that have already used that process. And it's not clear that the MS "fix" in favor of Edge will let you use the browser of your choice in any way other than by opening the browser directly: it could be that any Web link in any program of any kind will be read by Windows as a call for Edge to open. Pure speculation; I admit it.

According to the 'stories' it's effecting version 22449 and I'm on that one right now. So far I can use Firefox as my default browser with no issues.

I stopped reading the article after reading the first paragraph. Is Microsoft going to make it harder to change the default browser in future builds? Only MS knows. Even if they do, I'm sure they will be made to change it back.

If they block it, I will install and Dual boot with Linux and use it for the Net. MS should be broken up just like AT&T was as they are becoming a monopoly and I am tireing of the way they use people and conduct Business..
I remember when we use to get our phone service from Bell Atlantic. I also remember when we had a party line.

I'm on the same build. When I clicked on a link in an email it opened up in Firefox.
I checked the key defaults and all are set to Firefox. IMO,.. Much to do about nothing.
