I recently upgraded my PC to WIndows 11. I've been using Microsoft Money Plus for many years. And despite the fact that this little checkbook program was retired quite some time ago, it continued to work in Windows 10.

Unfortunately, I didn't save the setup file for Microsoft Money Sunset Plus; and now Microsoft has removed the program setup link from their site. So there's the question. Does anyone know of a safe and reliable site where I can download this program?

There's so many sites out there that host free programs. Unfortunately, malware and other garbage is often a problem. And since I just installed Windows 11 Pro, I don't want to take chances of getting a setup file (for this program) that is infected by malware or other junk. Thanks for any replies.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

Yes. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine has an archived copy of that Microsoft page. You can download it from there.

Yes, I will certainly keep that site in mind for other downloads as well. Now days, you just can't be too careful if you want to avoid malware and other garbage in freeware.

For example, I remember I got malware on one occasion from downloading the Imgburn program from Softpedia. That was years ago, but it was a very obnoxious situation because I could not get the embedded crapware out of my browser.

I don't necessary think that all these sites that host free downloads are deliberately trying to harm the end user, it's just that these things tend to happen because there are not the resources, or the will, to stop it from happening.

So I think that archive.org site is excellent, especially in cases where the PC user cannot get the download directly from the host. Thanks again for posting.

It's always fun to see others still using Microsoft Money. I am using a copy of Microsoft Money 2004 that I got with a Dell computer that I bought years ago. If they released a new version I would buy a license for sure.

Microsoft discontinued Money some time ago then the Sunset version came out. Money was frequently included as part of Microsoft Works and included on new OEM computers. Works 9.xx was the last of that program but still works on Win10, haven't tried it on Win11 yet, could be an issue as it wants an old version of Internet Explorer.

I am a big fan of Microsoft Money; and I've been a user of that software for the past 20 years (approximately). Looking back on it, it's surprising that it didn't develop more attention than it did! It's just so simple to use as a little checkbook program. And WAY better than keeping a handwritten register or simply balancing my checkbook by merely going by the bank's balance - as so many people tend to do now days without reconciling anything themselves.

Obviously, it was a disappointment for me when Microsoft announced their plans (over 10 years ago) to retire Microsoft Money. But then the free version (Microsoft Money Sunset Plus) came out around 2010 or 2011). So I just continued to use the free software version. Through the years, I've tried other checkbook programs to include Quicken. But nothing seems to compare to Microsoft Money for its ease of use, simplicity and efficiency!

We know that Microsoft Money (reportedly) requires Internet Explorer to function when the user clicks "export" and "ofx files" when reconciling your transactions with what the bank has of record. But somehow, this key part of the functionality is still working - even now in Windows 11. And that is without me using I.E. legacy mode within the MS Edge browser. Actually, my bank's web site won't even allow me to access their site with internet explorer compatibility mode for security reasons.

So again, I don't know how I am able to continue using this program (with the functionality of downloading transaction files from my bank's site) to my Microsoft Money desktop program. When the day comes that I can no longer download the "ofx" files from my bank's site to the MS Money software, then I guess I will be forced to stop using the program.

It's really a shame there has not been greater interest in keeping this program going indefinitely! As I've said, in my opinion, there's never been any other checkbook program that begins to compare to the simplicity of Microsoft Money! It's just a great little checkbook program.

Just curious, are you able to download the "ofx" files from your bank's web site? This is the key functionality that I hope will keep working in order to have the bank's site actually import the data into the MS Money checkbook program. I've only had Windows 11 for a short while. But I was very surprised to see it is working on my end.

Note: I "do" keep the box checked on the password fill in screen of Microsoft Money so that when I click "export" on my bank's web site, the ofx files won't be potentially stopped during the import process to the MS Money checkbook program on my desktop.

Why's that so important to you that you would stop using the program if it went away? I've always found it preferable to enter transactions myself, annotating them as necessary so I can easily answer when I bought that video card or whatever, and then I also manually balance at EOM.

Actually, I do both.

In other words, I manually enter everything in the check register of Microsoft Money myself (just as you do). Then every few days, I will go online to my bank's website and download the "ofx" files for the transactions that have cleared my bank account. This allows me to do a very quick reconciliation of the bank's records with my own. Microsoft Money then marks it reconciled 'R' in the register so that I always have a quick reference of everything pending versus deposits and expenses that are still pending reconciliation with the bank.

You are correct though. If the functionality is removed as far as Microsoft Money being able to accept the import of "ofx" files from a bank/credit union, I could "still" use the check register in Microsoft Money, I just wouldn't be able to reconcile the account in quite the same efficient way that Microsoft Money was originally intended.

I am guessing banks and credit unions have continued to offer ofx files because they understand that there are paid/subscription programs out there (i.e. Quicken) that rely on those files. No doubt, they are not doing it for Microsoft Money, since it's a retired program.

I could be wrong, but my theory is that Microsoft Money would have had a far bigger user base (especially back in its day) if there had been more market awareness of the program. But my fingers are crossed here that I can continue to use the program in the way that I am accustomed.

I see. I've mostly forgotten how the online stuff worked, it's been so long since I used it. One thing I do remember is that I didn't like downloading transactions, because the payee names would often be different than what I would enter, the dates might be different, etc, but you're not doing that. It would be nice to automatically reconcile instead of viewing statements on my iPhone and doing it manually, which is a minor PITA, though I still do it religiously for all accounts. Next time I'll see if ofx downloads are available.

Interesting everyone. I only use it to keep track of manually entered investments. mnyob99.dll was a file that needed to be replaced due to some issue many have experienced.

Has anyone found a way to do a scrolling screenshot of Microsoft Money's Portfolio Manager?

Yes, try using the feature of importing the ofx files into your Microsoft Money desktop check register. It works great for me after I've already previously entered my own transactions. I normally get a match (to my own transactions) every time and I can very quickly reconcile with the bank.

One buggy thing that I've noticed is that I need to keep Microsoft Money "closed" when I click the import option for the ofx files. If I don't do that - sometimes the ofx files don't seem to actually import into Microsoft Money. So if you experience that same issue, just click the import option of the ofx files from your bank to your MS Money program ("while keeping MS Money closed"). You will see that Windows will immediately prompt you to open MS Money. And when you do, the ofx files should instantly import to MS Money.

This program is so quick and efficient, I have always been surprised that more people didn't choose to use MS Money! I don't know, but I get the impression that "many" people now days don't reconcile at all. Amazing! They just view their balance online and accept whatever it is. And it seems others (if they reconcile their checkbook at all) scribble entries into an unorganized manual check register with a pen (the old fashioned way). I hate both of those options.....lol, and I just want to be able to keep using Microsoft Money the way I've done it for almost 20 years now using MS Money.

Interesting everyone. I only use it to keep track of manually entered investments. mnyob99.dll was a file that needed to be replaced due to some issue many have experienced.

Has anyone found a way to do a scrolling screenshot of Microsoft Money's Portfolio Manager?
Unfortunately, I can't comment on that. Although I am a long-term user of Microsoft Money, I never tried to use it for anything other than my checkbook. Maybe someone else could weigh in on your post.

I've been using MS Money and MSN Portfolio Manger since 1995. I've always done the checkbook the manual way, maybe because I rarely write checks.

Anyone know where I can download Money 2005? I purchased a copy a few years ago and have the key but have lost the disk. I can find 2004 version but I have 15 years worth of information in a 2005 file and 2004 will not open it.

A caveat, some versions of Microsoft programs come bundled or preinstalled with computers and may have been identified as OEM, some were purchased as Retail. Many times the keys for the two wouldn't interchange.

I'm downloading the Sunset, about 34MB, now from

Most times installing of Microsoft Works didn't need the Product Key but if it was Microsoft Works Suite it did need the key for the word processor, they had included a version of Word, many more features in it.
