Microsoft Photos App New Update

The new Photos app update has a great feature! Finally, they moved the floating menu (ribbon) to the top and made it like a ribbon. :clap:

They have added Hide Filmstrip to the right-click, but they didn't make it persistent, and every time you open an image, you have to select this option to hide the Filmstrip. I think it still needs more work... :thumbsup:

Consider that:

1- They have disabled right-click on the left side of the app to close it (I used to right click on the left corner of the apps to close them).
2- The file name is not showing when resizing the app (it only appears when the Photos app's window is maximised).
3- Common shortcuts have a dynamic alignment behaviour (centre alignment when the Photos app's window is maximised, left alignment when resized).
4- The most important thing! Microsoft didn't make window's control buttons (Minimize, Maximize, and Close Buttons) like Office's New Fresh UI!

They have forgotten about it to make window's control buttons FRESH(!) like Office's New UI!

I think many more works ahead (I use the Photos app a lot more than Photoshop for simple photo editing)… :yawn:

Assume this is the Insiders version as my RTM version is showing as 2021. Anyway, looking to the new app, though I mainly use it for quick viewing. Anything more, I use Adobe Bridge.

If you minimize the app to cover the entire image, you get the behavior @atinfo describes, and I get....

Image is too small but that's always been the case that you lose some info. Toolbar icons still evenly spaced.

Never mind, I see you figured it out. And yeah, I see no issue when the app is resized that small.

Ah sweet least its there! Its one i always forgot about but windows nowadays seems to like to update applications that way and i have em all set to manual. Makes sense i guess, If im updating a game and its on steam...thats where the update comes from. Just hadn't thought about it that way until i did haha

Yeah, I just never check the store for updates. Assumed they would happen automatically. I see they don't so I guess I need to start doing that as part of my monthly maintenance.

I think your screen resolution is more than 1080 (probably 2k or 1440). As I realized it has responsive behaviour, as long as the screen res allowed, it shows full row (the file name and centre aligned shortcuts). It has nothing to do with image size. It is screen res dependent (SS below). As you can see in 500 px (width) Photos app just shows Settings (3 dots).

I am not Insider member. I have Store automatic update off. I manually update only Photos app and Terminal (to see what is new and changes).
Adobe Bridge is a great app for photo browsing :thumbsup:

It works for me. As I said, I just use Photos as a quick viewer and resizer for snips. Anything more and its Bridge. That's me

I'm also a Photoshop user

Anyway, thanks for alerting us on the new update.

They (Google) made a big mistake (discontinued the offline version and switched to G-Photos :woozy:

that I don't use at all!). I am using the portable version of Picasa (instead of Bridge) to organize my graphic works. That's great for making albums and organizing the photos (is also lite and fast). I can't understand why they did make such an idiot decision (switching to a complete online version).

Picasa, wow i'd forgotten about this! I last used this in school maybe around 11 years ago( Probably not the version you're using but picasa none the less). Cool good to see people still using it!

I just use it as a viewer. It's simple, lite, free and still works offline.

ImageGlass was my go to but, it's gotten bulkier lately!

Not to mention the fact, one day MS will state: "On Sept. 15, 2022, you will no longer be able to use the legacy Windows Photo Viewer..." :nope:
