If there is a hardware problem with the laptop keyboard... reinstalling Windows will NOT fix it, and you will still have problems even in the install environment.

Yes. I meant too put external keyboard not external hard drive. I even ran diagnostics that asus offers and there's no errors. I've tried switching ram, trying 1 ram stick, trying m.2 only, trying 2.5 ssd only, to trying m.2 and a 2.5 ssd, external keyboard, Malware bytes, windows defender uninstall of the keyboard driver as we speak my cmos battery is out of my system for the night. It probably won't do any good but I'm frustrated and anything is worth a try at this point.

Just take out the laptop battery, if possible, and unplug the laptop as well. Then hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds.
Then you can pull the CMOS battery and put it back in 2-3 minutes.
But if you're quitting for the night due to frustration... that's understandable. :-)

It still sounds like a hardware problem unfortunately. Only now it's not an easy hardware problem. :(

Just for troubleshooting purposes... I would take the 2.5" SSD and hook it to the OTHER laptop (externally is fine), then use Minitool Partition Wizard to wipe that drive. [Or you could used a fresh, out of the box drive that's never been used]

It's very rare, but there are infections which can survive a reinstall of Windows. This is what we need to check for.

Then hook it up internally, on the laptop having the problems, with all other drives removed.
Try to install Windows on it (with no internet connection). If you still have the problem... it's definitely a hardware issue.

Once we KNOW (for a fact), if it's a hardware or software issue, the troubleshooting gets a lot easier.

Is either Ctrl key "stuck" on the actual keyboard?
Maybe a Dorito or piece of fried chicken skin down in there? :-)

Are you using any key mapping software?

I don't use any software like that. And the control keys seem too be just fine. I wonder if there's any software using my stuff. I know asus has a bunch of crap that automatically installs.

Even if there is, I wouldn't think it would cause the problems you're having. :(

Alright so I opened up a browser and typed w and the browser closed. So I held down the left control key opened up the browser pressed w then browser closes. I opened up the browser and held down the right control key for few seconds and the problem went away.

How do I disable the locking of keys so I don't have too worry about this?

Googling found these suggestions...

What also might work is to go into Device Manager, reached by right clicking the Start button, choose the Keyboard device, on Driver tab try Updating the driver automatically.

If this fails from the same location try rolling back or Uninstalling the Keyboard driver, which works in a surprising number of cases where keyboard is messed up by Updates. Restart PC to reinstall driver.

See if the keyboard will work in Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

It sounds like something's jammed under the CTRL key. Find a compressed air duster, and blast between the keys.
CTRL-W is the shortcut to close windows, so your key is stuck pressed. Which Onscreen Keyboard confirms.
