General Move or Restore Default Location of Documents Folder in Windows 11

  • Staff
Documents_folder_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to move or restore the default location of the Documents folder for your account in Windows 11.

The Documents folder (shell:personal) is a component of the user profile that is used as a unified location for storing personal data. By default, the Documents folder is a shell folder in the user's profile (%UserProfile%) that is used as a default storage location for saved documents.

If you like, you can move the Documents folder and its content to a location you want it at instead.

If the current Documents folder path is incorrect or is no longer available, you can use the Restore Default option to restore the default path.

Reference:

Contents

  • Option One: Move Location of Documents Folder in Properties
  • Option Two: Restore Default Location of Documents Folder in Properties
  • Option Three: Restore Default Location of Documents Folder using BAT file

Option One

Move Location of Documents Folder in Properties

1 If you turned on back up Documents folder to OneDrive, then you will need to temporarily turn off back up Documents folder to OneDrive until after you moved the Documents folder.

2 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

3 Navigate to the location (ex: "D") you want to move your Documents folder to, and create a new folder named Documents at this location. (see screenshot below)

Move_Documents_folder-1.png

4 Right click on the Documents folder in the navigation pane of File Explorer, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

If you don't see the Documents folder in the navigation pane, then type shell:Personal into the address bar of File Explorer, and press Enter to open the Documents folder no matter where it may be located.

You can then right click or press and hold on an empty area in the opened Documents folder, and click/tap on Properties.

2 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

3 Right click on the Documents folder in the navigation pane of File Explorer, and click/tap on Properties.

Option Three

Restore Default Location of Documents Folder using BAT file

This option can be very useful if Option Two is not available.

This option will not move the contents of the Documents folder from the old location to the default location. You will need to manually move the contents after restoring the default location if wanted.

1 If you turned on back up Documents folder to OneDrive, then you will need to temporarily turn off back up Documents folder to OneDrive until after you restored the default location of the Documents folder.

2 Click/tap on the download button below to download the Restore_default_location_of_Documents_folder.bat file.

(Contents of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

timeout /t 2 /nobreak >nul

if not exist "%UserProfile%\Documents" mkdir "%UserProfile%\Documents"

reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v "Personal" /t REG_SZ /d "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents" /f

reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "{f42ee2d3-909f-4907-8871-4c22fc0bf756}" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %%USERPROFILE%%"\Documents" /f

reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "Personal" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %%USERPROFILE%%"\Documents" /f

attrib +r -s -h "%USERPROFILE%\Documents" /S /D

timeout /t 1 /nobreak >nul

start explorer.exe

3 Save the BAT file to your desktop.

4 Unblock and run the BAT file.

5 You will now see a command prompt open and close to kill the explorer process, run the commands to restore the default location and attributes of the Documents folder, and restart the explorer process.

6 You can now delete the BAT file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I have Windows 11 (22H2) with a 256GB SSD C: Drive and 1TB HDD D: Drive. I want to move my 'Documents' folder (92GB in size) to my D: Drive, but when I open the properties page for the 'Documents' Folder to change the folder Location, there is no 'Location' Tab on the Property's dialogue. I have been unable to find any info on this, but one of my searches led to this article. Do you know why the 'Location' Tab would missing? Because it's a 'Home' Edition OS? Oh, and I am the registered System Admin.

Hello Matt, and welcome. :-)

Usually when you don't see a "Location" tab, it means that's not the source Documents folder.

As a test, type shell:Personal into Run (Win+R) and press Enter to open the source Documents folder, and see if it has the "Location" tab when you right click on the background of the folder window and click/tap on Properties.

It does have the tab and I tried to move the Folder after creating a Documents folder on D:\, select Ok and... [Do you want to move all files to the new location] : Yes. Alert dialogue: [can't move the folder because:
Funny thing is, the Location is one OneDrive - I never use it. Guess I'll have to figure out how to delete/uninstall that too.

You can turn off back up Documents folder to OneDrive to hopefully then be able to successfully move the Documents folder.

I was following this methodology:

It appears to be the same method in this tutorial.

Were you able to move the folder once turning off backing up the Documents folder to OneDrive?

No, some buried/embedded feature of the OS is preventing it and in true MS fashion it will take a lot of time and effort to figure it out. Why MS thought everyone would want to put their personal files up on a server vulnerable to every 15yo in the world defies logic, but that's what we have to deal with.

Thanks...

One final comment:
I appreciate the assistance of Brink and the Community and other experts here at 'elevenforum'. You were helpful and it is noted. Ultimately, using the 'System' Move method simply didn't work for me; reason? Unknown and likely unknowable without the input of the programmer who wrote the code for the involved 'modules.' I been doing this long enough (1980) to recognize when I've hit the wall, so I went to the source and hacked the Registry, edited the Shell Properties keys to reflect the location I wanted it to be (D:\Documents) and then copied the contents of my original Documents folder from the old machine to an Ex-Drive and wrote them into the new Folder from there. I probably should have done that to begin with, but going from Win-8.1 to Win-11 was a leap without any experience whatsoever in the new OS (not as big as going from Win-98SE to Win-8.1 though IMHO). Rebooted and the change was incoporated without a hiccup, and it involved a lot fewer steps. Makes me nostalgic for the days of DRDOS and the customization elements of that environment.
Thanks again, and see you on the flip-side.

I originated this question at the Microsoft Community Forum:

My documents were not getting updated in One Drive consistently, which may have been due to the old laptop I was using. I was downloading files from a flash drive to a new laptop and got a OneDrive message saying I was over the 5GB limit of free space. I decided not to use OneDrive and also realized I should have just updated the flash drive with everything from the old laptop. Since both OneDrive and what I had uploaded from the flash drive were incomplete, I decided to wipe the documents folders in OneDrive and on the new laptop completely clean and start over. I wound up deleting the Documents and Pictures folders. I'm not trying to retrieve any contents. I just want the empty originals back. I tried creating a new Documents folder under Home, but a copy of it showed up under Desktop, which I don't want. I have Windows 11. Thanks.

I was directed to the Window 10 instructions but had no luck. I had no Location tab to use in Option One, and once I disabled Bitdefender so that I could run the bat file, nothing showed up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello Jay, and welcome. :alien:

This should restore the folder inside your "C:\Users\<username>" folder instead. This is the source location used (linked) by Home > Quick access.

The restore the folder in Home, you would need to "Pin to Quick access" the folder from the location above.

Another option is to clear and reset the folders in Quick access like below.

Thanks so much for responding so quickly. Pin to Quick Access didn't work for a Stored Locally folder. I could do it with a One Drive folder, but I really want the Stored Locally folder.

When I tried to clear and reset the folders in Quick access, it gave me an error message:

Remove-Item : A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '/s'.

Test running the command in a command prompt instead of PowerShell.

Just to verify, did you turn off backing up the folders to OneDrive like below?

Success!

I had not turned off the backup of folders to OneDrive, so I did that first. Then I did Win + R and typed cmd.exe in the field and hit return to pull up the prompt. Then I pasted the delete command that I tried in PowerShell, and a "Deleted File" message came up instantly. I checked File Explorer, and the Stored Locally versions of the Documents and Pictures folders were back. Thank you SO much! I hope this helps others.

I didn't think I was going to use OneDrive, but I've changed my mind. I'm guessing it's OK to turn backup of folders back on...?

Great news.

Sure, you can turn on backing up a folder to OneDrive if wanted. The contents of that folder will be moved to the OneDrive folder on your PC, and then synced to the online OneDrive (cloud).

I have a similar problem, I am trying to get "%UserProfile%\Documents" to work but my documents folder is dumped into one drive, it's no longer located in user/documents it's in user/one drive/documents. I am trying to get a Dos command that will export data to a folder in one drive documents that will then sync these files to the cloud and down to the new computer for import.

When setting up a new laptop I have always exported WiFI profiles to netsh wlan export profile key=clear folder=%UserProfile%\Documents\Wifi then migrated data to the new computer. now with Onedrive it's great to copy the data to the new computer but when I run his command it dumps the files in the old document folder and not the Onedrive one. Also, every one drive location is different. Link mine is %UserProfile%\OneDrive - ***********.com\Documents. how do I get a generic location that drops in local one drive?

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

To have "%UserProfile%\Documents" work, you'll need to turn off having your Documents folder backed up to OneDrive like below.
