The question is not a simple one to answer. The link below will provide quite a bit of information on connecting remotely to a NAS.

I have no first-hand experience with the Devolo product line. If they have a moneyback policy, you could certainly give them a try.

How are you linking upstairs with the Internet through the Router? I have 2 NAS drives and 2 printers attached to my Router via Ethernet cable and can Map them from any computer that can get to/through the Router whether connected by Ethernet cable or by Wi-Fi.

Powerline adapters are the simplest solution but speeds are totally unpredictable, regardless of make, because their performance is largely determined by the amount of electrical noise present in your house wiring and the distance between router and NAS. My NAS used to deliver about 13mbps which was pretty useless for large files but when it failed I just plugged a 1TB HDD directly into the router. That does the job a bit better, about 35mbps, and is accessible from any computer on the network.

With modern wifi systems and decent internet -- a really easy way to move NAS (whether it's a computer system or a device) is to plug a short length of LAN cable from the device to a cheap unmanaged switch -- then a SINGLE lan cable from switch to a quality wifi extender which can connect to your router. A decent Wifi extender (I'm using a NightHawk type) will transmit and receive on the 2.5 and 5 GHZ bands concurrently and also operate in full duplex mode giving with current technology a max theoretical speed of around 1.3 Gbps which should be plenty fast enough for most things.

Don't have multiple lan connections to the wifi extender ports -- my experience is that performance is much better using a cheap switch and a single cable to the extender.

I have 2 complete NAS systems connected this way from House to Router and another 2 devices in my "Shed" around 100 metres away. "She who must be obeyed" likes it too -- as there's no wires / boxes in the main room where the TV set is apart from an Amazon Firestick which plugs straight into the TV and uses the TV wifi connection.

@Berton

depending on where you want your hardware I reckon my solution is far more tidy and flexible, and involves a lot less cabling too. Having any sort of Computer equipment in my kitchen would probably result in disaster !!!! as I'd probably put the router into the dish washer thinking it was some sort of kitchen appliance !!! I do have a small TV in the kitchen but that's quite usual these days.

Mine isn't complicated, just more equipment that most will need. It's all contained within a 14' x 14' [or smaller] "office". We bought this 28'x56' double-wide and the room could have been a nursery or whatever beside the Master but it was lacking a connecting door and we were older so it became my office. All the wires are contained in that room with a doorless opening.

That's fine.

Mines a sprawling large detached property with a "converted Shed" around 100 metres from the main house (has electricity, water, toilet,etc). I often have people round to watch UK Premier League Footy (Real football with a round ball that one actually kicks => not that thing using a squashed rugby ball where the object of the game seems to be to bash the brains out of the opposition and kicking the thing rarely seems to be a part of the process). So decent internet and large screen is mandatory and the wifi extender does its job perfectly.
