Moving Windows 7 software onto new Windows 11 machine

Windows 11 Pro
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I can't find it.
I'm a long-time 7 user who is now getting a new machine that runs under 11 Pro. I have lots of software on the old machine (a Samsung R780 that is now about 10 years old) that work extremely well and that I want to continue to use. All of this software is fully legal, but much of it is now unsupported by the vendors, many of whom are in fact no longer in business. So I can't simply get new versions of this software. What ways are there to get this software across to the new machine? Or is it simply possible to run the old system in some sort of virtual box on the new one? How would this be done?
All help gratefully received!

It's not easy to 'move' Windows-based programs as there are the files for the program copied to the drive, icons created, support files such as .dll added to the Windows folder and Registry entries made so Windows knows how to run the programs. I've done a few but it took time and required the old computer be running alongside the new one so as to copy any necessary files when prompted by the program that it needed them, copy from old to a thumb drive then paste in the same location in the new. It's always best to have the install media, disc or downloaded file.

You may be able to get installers. Try googling them, there are some software archives out there. If any have security keys you can probably reuse the W7 ones. It's probably best to check any you download with VirusTotal to check if they are clean.

There are also programs that claim to be able to transfer them for you. I've no experience of these and I don't think they are free.

If you have many applications it would be a great pain to reinstall, let alone if you don't have the installers for all. If Windows 7 is 64-bit I would first clone my Windows 7 hard disk on the new computer disk. I would then upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 64-bit first and make sure all drivers are updated and working OK. I would finally upgrade to Windows 11. I can assure you this is a lot faster and easier than finding installers for all the applications, reinstalling and reconfiguring everything from start. Let alone the time needed to backup all your data and then restore at the new computer. Think about it.

It's certainly possible and I have done so in the past but you are left with the same problem of installing your programs into the VM. You may be able to install a backup image. if you have one. Also if you can't activate the installation you will have to recreate the VM every 30 days (actually you can extend that 3 times to give up to 120 days).

If you take this route use V6 VirtualBox as V7 is new and a bit broken in places.

Others have done it, I don't as I still have a Win7 Desktop and a Win7 Notebook. What I've read is with Win10 running it has been done and Win11 should work the same. The need to do it will be influenced by any programs that won't run on Win11 or Win10, haven't run into any yet. Win11 and Win10 can run 32-bit programs but 16-bit won't. And Win11 will only install as 64-bit, no 32-bit version.

I don't believe you would have any problem activating Windows 7 online, but in worst case you can always call Microsoft and activate by phone. If the option to activate by phone doesn't appear you can force it from Command Prompt by executing slui 4
