MS quality update (for W11) KB5058889 dated 28 May 2025 crashes explorer

I never ran into a problem like this but the update does strange things to my wife's laptop.


Not only does it crash Windows Explorer, but it realigns my shortcut Icons on the taskbar and pops up some type of toolbar menu.


So, I uninstalled it.

PS, after the uninstall Windows still says it was successfully installed on the date I attempted the update install. But when I scan for updates, windows tells me it is available to install.



How do I know for sure I successfully uninstalled it. I’m not sure. Seems like I did.

Hi Dan, welcome.

My assumption is that is says it was successfully installed on the date mentioned because it was actually installed on the date mentioned.
I’d doubt that message gets removed just because that update was uninstalled/removed.

If the update is showing as an option to be installed, then one could assume that the update isn’t currently installed.

Cumulative Previews aren’t mandatory.

On the Windows Update page, turn off the toggle that says “Get the latest updates as soon as they're available”
This way you should only have Cumulative Previews installed if you select to have them installed.

Then they will appear in either Windows Update (as an option) or in the following location:
Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates

Cumulative Updates (Non Preview), will automatically start to install when you check Windows Update

I did turn off the toggle for the quality updates. I also agree the update must have been uninstalled. I will update my web page with the W11 Build info tomorrow since it in on another computer and I'm using my W10 desktop for this conversation. Thanks to all for the replies and let me know if

KB5058889 has this known issue for other folks. Should be "windows 11 quality update KB 5058499" NOT KB5058889. Sorry about that.​

That’s a Cumulative Update PREVIEW, not a quality update. You don’t need to install it and you seem like you’ve done the right thing. All good!

Yes, the Laptop with W11 is back the way I want it. Uninstalling the 4 Preview Update did the trick. Yes, it is a a Cumulative Update PREVIEW.

I'm sort of new at this stuff. I'm still wondering if I'm the only one who has had this problem?

Generally you would know if you personally installed an app or software to change the way your taskbar or start menu behaves etc
Like ExplorerPatcher or some other Windows Tweak software?

Has any 3rd party app been installed that makes Windows 11 start menu or task bar look like it did in an earlier version of windows.?
There are a number of such apps that folks use. There's no way I can know them all in order for you to check? It would be up to you or whomever set up your windows for you to know.

The thing to consider though, as per your posts, is that as soon as you removed the Cumulative Preview, the problem was gone

The last update BEFORE this one, I had to update StartAllBack to the newest as I could right click on the taskbar get the menus, but nothing happened.
