My new(ish) laptop just rebooted spontaneously for the second time: why?

I bought my current laptop about 10 weeks ago and have been very happy with it. But twice in those 10 weeks, it rebooted spontaneously and I am baffled by why. By spontaneously, I mean that I didn't click on anything to make it reboot and I didn't get a BSOD yet the screen suddenly went black in the middle of writing an email and, after a brief pause, I saw that it was rebooting. It came back up fine with no obvious damage done aside from losing the email I was writing but I'm concerned there may be an underlying problem with it. It's still under warranty and if there is a system issue of some kind, I'd rather fix it free under warranty that have to pay for it later.

Is there any way to determine WHY it crashed? Will there be any logs or such that can pinpoint what happened and why?

Thank you, I've unchecked that box and will restart in a moment. It's only happened twice in 10 weeks so it'll take a while to tell if it made a difference. ;-)

Most likely they were Windows updates and Restarts going on un notified. There were at least 2 in the last couple of months.

You can change the way Windows updates, and Active hours, and notifications operates by doing some configuration.

This is for the Home version so you will at least have these:
Settings > Windows updates > Advanced options >
Get me up to date > Off
Notify me when a restart is required to finish updating > On
Active hours > make your settings there.

I would not worry unduly. These things often sort themselves out. The important thing is to backup data frequently, and preferably make image backups.

I grew up in the days when pcs would crash several times a day. We learnt to backup frequently like hourly!

I have never lost that discipline.

This is the first computer where I finally got my act together and set up a backup plan and got a separate backup drive. I do a weekly full backup and a daily incremental with Hasleo. I haven't had to use them yet so I'm still a little nervous about how the recovery would go but I'll deal with that if it happens.
