NAS permissions

To be honest, I don't know if this is a network question or not.
Recently upgraded from W10>W11. Since then I can not get my backup program to write to my NAS - connected to my router via cable. PC connected to router wirelessly. Keep getting something similar to 'Failed to create directory' which I understand to mean 'lacks permission.'
I've found to grant permission, I must open Explorer, right click on the NAS, select Properties, select the Security tab. I have no Security tab. I have NO tabs.
How do I determine if W11 has granted permission to write to my NAS?
How do I grant permssion?

What NAS - Brand? Model?
What backup program?
What version of Windows 11 - Insiders or RTM?

While I may not be able to help with your issue, someone else may with the info I asked about.

Further to @Dru2's request, you should complete the specifications in My computer. There is room for a second system, so it would probably be good to give specs for the NAS also.

We can forgo the system specs for now as it's more about the NAS and backup software.

WIth that when you upgraded to Windows 11, did you setup up networking as it was under Windows 10? Those may have been reset during the upgrade to 11....

Try this -

Open Turn Windows features on or off
Tick SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support

Accept any security warning and try to connect. If unsuccessful undo the change.

That should work. From the User Manual for the DS210j it states that "Synology NAS supports the following file sharing protocols:
- For Windows: SMB/CIFS..."

There is no mention in the manual of any support for SMB 2.0, so it is safe to assume that it is a legacy device that only supports SMB 1.0. You just need to enable the 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Client' in Windows Features to be able to read/write to a legacy NAS such as yours appears to be. You do not need the 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Server', and you should make sure the automatic removal is not enabled.

Pleased it worked for you but just a small correction - open the settings for SMB 1.0 and only select the Client option. That will reduce the security risk of running SMB 1.0. but it will still do what you want.

A default install of Windows 10/11 supports SMB2 and SMB3, with a preference for using the highest available version. It will however connect using SMB2 to a Windows 7 machine. Here my network as seen from a Windows 11 PC, where the Toshiba 2TB share is a usb HDD on my router (SMB 1.5), TOSH-C650D is a Win7 PC (SMB 2.1) and the two W10 and W11 PCs are connected to using SMB 3.1.1.

As long as your NAS uses SMB 2.0 or higher, as any modern one would, then that is sufficient. The problem only occurs if you have an older NAS or file server that can only use SMB 1.0.

Any Linux distro these days even running on really ancient hardware can use SMBV3 or whatever these days -- just set the level in your smb.conf file (Samba). The problem is if you have older smart TVs, fire / roku sticks etc or even older "built in stand alone" NAS drives then SMB1 is likely to be needed still.

If you update KODI on a fire stick type device to latest (rel 19.xx) or dev version (rel 20.xx) then later SMB protocols are supported and work. -- Use settings->system from kodi panel and enable expert settings. I find Kodi brilliant on an amazon fire stick for accessing NAS multimedia -- plays any content (audio / video) even obscure formats like ape/cue and plays dvd / blu ray iso rips (including menus etc).

I have a Terramaster F4-210 Nas. I was having problems with one backup program. It would write to the Nas but nyou could not get the backoff off the Nas with the program(Macrium Reflect). I would have to copy it and paste it to a intenal drive in my computer. Aomei Backupper worked fine with the Nas in both directions. Come to find out it was my router giving the program problems. I had updated routers and it worked fine. I was having other problems at the same time with the router.
