Solved Nesting quotes

@Anak (y)

You can also quote the member name and # , and the post # by copying the optional html parameters into Notepad. It is very easy to construct complex postings :-)

Is it possible to 'nest' multiple quotes in a reply?
I did it.
The plain Quote button can do it too.
That's definitely worth five cookies.
Thumbs Up2.png
You can nest them any way you like just by dragging the quotes around...

@Anak ,

How about giving us a quick summary of what you discovered that Hayden hadn’t made clear?
Okay sure;
As with any nesting and to keep continuity you move each succeeding quote in front of the first quote

Here's what I started with and I'm using bbcode in order to to see it:
Code:
[quote]Done with notepad[/quote]
[quote]Done with notepad[/quote]
[quote]Done with notepad[/quote]
[quote]Done with notepad[/quote]
[quote]Done with notepad[/quote]
[quote]Done with notepad[/quote]

After moving each to in front of the first you'll have this, again, using the code to show it.
Code:
[quote][quote][quote][quote][quote][quote]Done with notepad[/quote]
Done with notepad[/quote]
Done with notepad[/quote]
Done with notepad[/quote]
Done with notepad[/quote]
Done with notepad[/quote]

Which the 11F server reads and it becomes this with no code tags:
Done with notepad
Done with notepad
Done with notepad
Done with notepad
Done with notepad
Done with notepad

It's different when using actual posts. It's also different in 11F (ElevenForums) than it was in 7F (SevenForums) and 10F (TenForums) I believe it's b/c of the newer programming in 11F.
In 7 and 10F all you had to do was highlight the succeeding post identifier and move it to before the first post, keeping the order to preserve continuity.

In 11F you click on the end of the quote, there after the clear? you wrote and then quote another post.

Your post, using code to see it:
Code:
[USER=3996]@Anak[/USER] ,

How about giving us a quick summary of what you discovered that Hayden hadn’t made clear?
[USER=1082]@Haydon[/USER] , I have it figured out. Thx!

Becomes this:
@Anak ,

How about giving us a quick summary of what you discovered that Hayden hadn’t made clear?
@Haydon , I have it figured out. Thx!

Notice, The first posts blue quote bar on the left becomes longer.

If your nesting doesn't look right when previewed its usually b/c a bracket, left [ or right ] is missing.

I've been tryin' with it but can't seem to get it, been a long day and I'm tired probably a touch of the fibro fog to.
Thx for figurin' it out Ghot, I'll get it.

And thx to the powers that are for makin' this a separate thread.
Ghot, I believe I have your one description of how to do it.
It seems it all depends on where the cursor is.

I need more practice but I got it Ghot . . . :-)

Haydon, could you elaborate on using notepad for this?
@Anak Look at the BB code by clicking on [ ]
This is a case where code is simpler than gui :-)
This is all I see when quoting your post.

And this when I use the brackets [ ]
Code:
[QUOTE="Haydon, post: 267546, member: 1082"]
I did the following using Notepad, adapt as desired :D
[/QUOTE]

I'm missin' somethin'
@Anak The
Code:
[QUOTE] ... [/QUOTE] syntax can be nested in any way you want, just like in html (well, it IS in fact html code) The =" ... " are optional html parameters

I am not a coder myself, I just happen to know a few code snippets, I can't explain it any further. The best way is to experiment with the code and use 'preview' :-)

Edit: I just had to improvise a way to display syntax without the system displaying it as such LOL
I believe I know now, like you say "I'll have to experiment", thx!
@Haydon , I have it figured out. Thx!
@Anak ,

How about giving us a quick summary of what you discovered that Hayden hadn’t made clear?

I still did it the same way.

Quote a post.
Put cursor at the end of the text in the post I just quoted.
Quote the next post.
Put cursor at the end of the text in the post I just quoted.
Quote the next post.
Put cursor at the end of the text in the post I just quoted.
Quote the next post.

Keep repeating.

I haven't tried it, but you can probably "sort" the nested quotes as well.

Instead of... "Put cursor at the end of the text in the post I just quoted", I could go up a few levels and put the cursor at the end of the text in say the 2nd post I quoted, that's in a four deep nest.

Like this.
Say I'm nesting quotes and I'm down to the one with the YELLOW dot.
Maybe... I can THEN, put the cursor at the end of the text in the quote with the RED dot, and then quote yet another post?

How often do you need to nest quotes, though?

Just don't do stupid :poop: like this ⬆️, especially to someone else!!!
John will get p*ssed off and you'll get a stern reprimand, if not banned altogether!
I think that the common, singular quote in 11F is an EXTREMELY fortunate forum design choice (y)

One of the worst things that can happen with nested quotes in a forum is spiraling down a rathole (n)
