New HP PC

Received my new HP PC yesterday and I can NOT say it was a pleasant experience. The setup was miserable. I did NOT know what all the setup was asking. After contacting HP Tech Support, they had me reset it to factory. WOW took 5 hours.

During the setup it came up and said "We are giving you Windows 11". At this time I really did NOT want to get Windows 11, but I saw no way to stop it.

After I finally got to desktop that I sort of recognized, I could not see my HDD in "This PC". I was supposed to have and SSD with Windows installed and an HDD for data. I understand this happens sometimes when going from Win 10 to Win 11. I will have to call Tech Support again and see how to fix this.

Anyway I look at it, it was a rough day.

Open Disk Management by typing diskmgmt.msc into Start Menu to if the HDD assign a drive letter or needs to be initialize.

It is also possible (due to shipping turbulence, otherwise known as courier lobbing box in van from a distance) that the data/ power cable has become disconnected or was not connected at the build stage.

What model was it?

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like W11 started to install as soon as it was turned on. Now you’ve reset to factory settings, maybe let Windows keep updating till there are no more updates. If drives still not showing though, I’d send it back.

Why? If it works then there's no reason to send it back.

Follow @FreeBooter's recommendation in post #2. That could work.

To get it replaced if it’s not showing what was advertised.

Yes it’s a good suggestion. Unless you’re not technically minded and just want HP to sort it.

I think so. It doesn't take long, and it's an easy solution if that's the issue. The OP didn't say this problem occurred prior to installing Windows 11, so it could be that the drive letter was somehow wiped. I have this happen a lot with portable SSDs.

Also, if the SSD has Windows on it, it's probably there. Windows 11 just isn't seeing the drive.

I wonder if 10 saw the drive or not? I would also like to know if it was a desktop or notebook.. and the model number... so many questions to get answers to before a solution can be found.

Good point. Which one isn’t showing? The teenager’s PC is HP and has two drives- Windows cos installed in the smaller one (ssd) and it has a bigger hard drive as d drive. So if it’s the d drive that’s not showing it would still have windows on.

If it’s a PC could you just look in the box and see if there are two drives! If there aren’t they may have sent you the wrong model.

But post 2 is probably the first and best check.

Just read back- yes it’s an ssd and hdd and the hdd not showing. As mentioned above could have just become unseated in transit. Is the box easy to open? Or send it back
