I've had the machine for a month. Yesterday the Office icons failed to start programs. Regardless of which icon location I used. I went to my fail-safe fix... I did an online Office repair from the uninstall page. Whereas the reinstall has always worked in years past, this time (and I ran the repair twice) it did zero.

Then I tried the Firefox icon and same problem- no response. Yet I tried Edge, Chrome, Note++ and they loaded

Unless someone's got a great idea I'll be using the Windows repair that leaves data but removes app and reloads Windows. Unfortunately, I hadn't as yet installed Reflect. My bad.

Try a repair upgrade - download latest iso, mount it as a drive and run setup.exe.

Make an image backup first.

Okay, just to be certain. The MS instructions say '~ if not using a DVD or USB...' I takes this to mean I can download the iso file to my C:\downloads dir and mount/setup from the SSD. No?

This sounds like drive failure to me. Have you tried using crystal disk or your computer manufacturers software to see if the drive is healthy?

The in-place install made zero difference. I then tried rolling back before the last Windows update with a similar result. I'm now doing a reset whilst keeping data.
You can bet your bupee that Reflect will be installed just after AV and Office!

It could very well be caused by a corrupt user account. An inplace upgrade won't fix that. Make a second user account to test the theory. Make new user, local administrator account. Restart the computer and log in to the new account. If everything is as it should be in the new account, it points to your regular user account being corrupted. If the problem exists in the new account as well, to a Windows problem. If that proves to be the case and since you have performed a repair install which did not help, it may well require a reset with remove everything. This is in essence a clean install of windows.

Attached is a short tutorial I wrote describing how to create a new user account and how to get your files moved over to it if your old account is corrupted.

Why does this happen? I had a corrupt user account before and just said screw it and reinstalled fresh to get over it. Its a microsoft product yet they corrupt our accounts somehow? Doesnt make any sense.

Why does this happen?
As with any corruption who can say what causes it. But with user accounts, sure sometimes it's caused by windows, but I'm of a mind that corruption is caused more from the inadvertent actions of the user than Windows. We are altering our accounts all the time; tweaking, untweaking, installing and uninstalling programs, changing settings, adding and deleting files and folders, plugging and unplugging devices. I think, for whatever reason, sometimes we end up hosing up our accounts. The registry is a fickle thing. I have a second account that I keep installed all the time just for the purpose of testing.

If you bought the laptop one month ago, it is under warranty. Check Your warranty and send it back to Lenovo for free replacement.

Yes, sending it back is an option but you would still want to set it back to factory default before doing so.

How many data do you have? I would take a backup of the data and then clean install Windows 11. I would delete all partitions on disk (including the recovery partition which takes valuable space) and then proceed and let Setup automatically create the appropriate partitions. I would then manually download the drivers from manufacturer and install them. I would rather not rely on Windows Update. Frequently the drivers at manufacturer site are not always the latest, so I would download the latest graphics drivers directly from Intel (or AMD or whatever). After everything is OK I would install the applications and restore my data.
