Microcode and BIOS code requesting elevated core voltages which can cause Vmin shift especially during periods of idle and/or light activity.
a. Mitigation: Intel® is releasing microcode 0x12B, which encompasses 0x125 and 0x129 microcode updates, and addresses elevated voltage requests by the processor during idle and/or light activity periods.

I have a beta BIOS with the 129h Intel microcode with the voltage fixes and am testing it now on my Asus/13900KS system.

Looks like it is on track for mid-August official BIOS release I imagine, for those following this.

Asus is not the only board maker releasing new bios updates.

Asrock & MSI are also dishing out bios updates for some of their boards that use 13th & 14th gen Intel CPUs:

Intel's patch for CPU instability and crashing issues rolls out from MSI and ASRock — Asus ROG motherboard users can also access a beta update

Enthusiasts will be keen to check performance and see a halt to degradation.

Sure. No doubt. Point was Intel has released it to board manufacturers.

Still working on the memory testing (I had tightened the timings alot), but I don't think so. Will report back.

Also running the beta Bios on a 790 Strix -F and 13900K. My instant voltage for single core has never been higher than 1.350v even before this new microcode. Still using LLC3 and SVID In trained mode @1.296v. So As far as I 'm concerned this update hasn't done anything. Memory is running @6400 Mt in tweaked mode and is steady as a rock. Just as a test I ran Cinebench R23, cpu pulled 225 watts @ 1.1640v with a one off score of 38589. So for me there is no drop in the performance from the previous BIOS.

No performance hits here that I have found
Ran Cinibench23, y-cruncher, desktop graphics GDI - all good. Cinibench at 40k+

I am running LLC4, ACLL 0.20, pCores 5.7GHz all core, Ecores 4.4GHz all cores, rIng 4.8 GHz, SVID adaptive
Have Maximum core Temp set to 85c, power limits both 320W and current 400A

There are reports on the Asus forum about worse instability and poor performance using the Beta BIOS. I'm waiting for the full release and positive user feedback.

The latest microcode update (0x129) will limit voltage requests above 1.55V as a preventative mitigation for processors not experiencing instability symptoms. This latest microcode update will primarily improve operating conditions for K/KF/KS processors. Intel is also confirming, based on extensive validation, all future products will not be affected by this issue.

Intel is continuing to investigate mitigations for scenarios that can result in Vmin shift on potentially impacted Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors. Intel will provide updates by end of August.

Intel’s internal testing – utilizing Intel Default Settings - indicates performance impact is within run-to-run variation (eg. 3DMark: Timespy, WebXPRT 4, Cinebench R24, Blender 4.2.0) with a few sub-tests showing moderate impacts (WebXPRT Online Homework; PugetBench GPU Effects Score). For gaming workloads tested, performance has also been within run-to-run variation (eg. Cyberpunk 2077, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer III – Mirrors of Madness) with one exception showing slightly more impact (Hitman 3: Dartmoor). However, system performance is dependent on configuration and several other factors.

For unlocked Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors, this latest microcode update (0x129) will not prevent users from overclocking if they so choose. Users can disable the eTVB setting in their BIOS if they wish to push above the 1.55V threshold. As always, Intel recommends users proceed with caution when overclocking their desktop processors, as overclocking may void their warranty and/or affect system health. As a general best practice, Intel recommends customers with Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors utilize the Intel Default Settings.

So it is more of a mitigation than a fix IMO. I already had my core voltage limited 10 1.5 in my BIOS (and I assume that actually worked as intended).

Yep. I’m on 2103 and when checking for newer bios I see those two. I’m holding off for now, not sure of either one.

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this. is updating to the latest bios for the K version of the i9 14900 required? I've had no issues with my CPU and I'm not really seeing the need to update and risk frying my board.

Intel has extended their warranty on that CPU.

It's unclear whether not updating the BIOS would affect the warranty. My guess is that it's not required for the warranty extension.

On the other hand, I haven't bricked a motherboard in many years with a BIOS update, though. (A couple of early EFI boards had issues.)

What BIOS version are you on now? How do you use your computer?

This BIOS version correctly uses the Intel profile by default. Earlier versions do not, which can possibly result in instability and long term degradation of the processor. It also contains new processor microcode that mitigates a microcode bug that gave the cores too much voltage by limiting the voltage. This is what iintel currently considers the root cause of stability and degredation issues. Depending on we hat version you have, it may also update your Intel ME firmware.

It is up to you, but I would/ did and I recommend it. It is not going to burn your rig down. But if you do update it, I would wait until they release an official version rather than the beta.

I'm on Version 1662 Beta Version. just got done updating the bios to the latest. to answer previous questions.. I use my PC for gaming/recording gameplay or basic use such as watching YouTube.

Asus have now released a beta BIOS with microcode 0x129 for my Z790 board. What do people think of this beta release? I usually skip beta BIOS releases and wait for the fully tested BIOS update.
