I had a message today from Norton, full of how the "new" Norton will look after all my security needs and how wonderful it will be, apart from a new yellower look it actually told me nothing. Any Norton users know what the so called changes will be? I am a big fan of Norton, I have used them for many years like the old days of System Works. I never use free or cheap AV, the company got hit once so I am extra careful.

I think I used Norton many years ago but it's not on my fav list anymore. Right now I use Defender but I'm looking for a better one.

When my Bitdefender AV/firewall (paid) runs out this August, I think I'll try Bitdefender AV (free) and Tinywall (free),
and see how that works out.

The full Bitdefender Internet Security is great, but it's getting a bit bloated. It has 16 modules, of which I use... three.
I use AV, firewall and Threat Defense (heuristics).

If you have a family or a situation where more than one person uses the computer, some inexperienced,
Then I highly recommend Bitdefender Internet Security. It does.... everything, and even bloated, still runs fast and doesn't bog down the computer.

But for one person on a single user computer, it's overkill.
After 8 years, I'm just tired of having to keep my eye on 13 excess modules, that I don't use.

Almost forgot... the paid version has 24/7 tech support, where real people answer the phone, every time.
1 for sales, 2 for install and tech support... that's it for the computer assist.

I cannot recommend Norton High enough, they did go through a bad spell back along. I, for some reason never trusted defender I think years ago it wasn't very good but it's probably fine now, good and popular. Here in the UK McAfee is very popular

I used Symantec (Norton) back in the day. That was a great AV as well.
This was from my XP days.... (Symantec and Zonealarm re-install screenshots)

Amazing @Ghot you still have it. I remember Zone Alarm with the yellow and purple, I think half the UK had it at one time or another. I can't remember what happened to it, it sort of fell out of favour.

Back in the day, Zonealarm was the best free firewall ever created.
Anytime something wanted to enter or exit your computer, it would popup a box.
You could answer yes or no or ask me every time. And it remembered your answers. It was perfect.

It's still around, but they tossed in everything including the kitchen sink, and ruined it.
And... it no longer free. :(

Hi,
Think everyone was a sucker and used norton
Heck I did and found mbam pro and never looked back clean every since.
Why do you say that? Norton has always protected my PC's and if I every get a virus I have a guarantee they will sort it out

Hi,
Experience
Norton online backup is the only thing they have going for themselves

Norton used mbam to clean a system after they failed to protect it
This was the best thing norton did for me personally by introducing me to mbam I found mbam pro lifetime keys and bought 6 of them

Never paid for an av since then some where around 2009 and never infected either and didn't change the way I browsed the web
That's a lot of money not wasted :D

Personally, I don't use any Microsoft products other than the operating system. I use Norton, Libreoffice, Dropbox, etc. Using other than Microsoft, is just an added layer of security protection, in my opinion.

@ThrashZone Obviously I totally disagree because I have had the opposite experience with Norton and Personally I like MBAM for malware, would I trust it as a AV, I think not. Of course that is just my opinion

Hi,
For years MSE and mbam pro was the real combo to have not a paid av.
Obviously my interaction with the likes of norton and even mcafee are from 2009 and before
They were both crapware.

I cannot recommend Norton High enough, they did go through a bad spell back along. I, for some reason never trusted defender I think years ago it wasn't very good but it's probably fine now, good and popular. Here in the UK McAfee is very popular
Are you kidding!!!!?

It is only because it gets bundled with new PCs and those who do not know otherwise fall for the marketing hype and pay good dosh when Defender is fine, and free!

Personally, I don't use any Microsoft products other than the operating system. I use Norton, Libreoffice, Dropbox, etc. Using other than Microsoft, is just an added layer of security protection, in my opinion.
So, you pay for Norton when free Defender is fine. Then you use Libreoffice and Dropbox when the fee you pay toward Norton is more than 50% of MS Office (far superior to Libreoffice) and you get 1 TB of Onedrive which is far superior to the basic Dropbox capability.

Where do you come to the (imo misguided) conclusion you get an added layer of protection using non MS Tools. I would say there is more chance of 3rd party tools having bugs that can be exploited and less likely to be fixed. Of course, hackers may be more likely to target MS software but equally MS put a lot of effort to provide all round protection for its software.

Still your choice in the end.
