New versions of Windows 11 will be released once per year


It seems Microsoft is stepping back from twice-yearly updates, the following is from the Window 11 lifecycle documents.

What is the servicing timeline for a version (feature update) of Windows 11?​

New versions of Windows 11 will be released once per year. Customers should always install the latest version before the current version reaches end of servicing to remain supported by Microsoft.

Me too.. it's more logical to do it this way. While I like new versions I don't need an update more that one time a year

I wouldn't complain at every two years for major updates. Take more time to develop new features and technologies to include, and spend more time fixing bugs. Because, this is Microsoft, so bugs are going to happen. lol.

besides, I've seen yearly updates for other OSs and some work, while some .... work not as well (I'm looking at you, Google, with your yearly Android updates....10/Q and 11/R - no major (UI) changes there, until the current 12/S...)

IMHO, Release builds should not be on a time schedule. New builds should only be released when MS feels they are ready and not just to meet a time line. With that said, I'll be using Insider builds on at least two of my computers. If I'm satisfied with the Insider releases I may run Insider builds on all three of my devices. I have two desktops and one laptop. I'm not going to upgrade my wife's laptop until windows 11 is released to the general public. That is if it's capable of running Win 11. I haven't check it yet.

Why is the Home version still called Windows 10 in this schedule? And what's the difference between W11 and W11 Pro (especially, W11 Education and W11 Pro Education :unsure:)?

Since Win11 security features are aimed directly at corporate and government systems, a once-a-year upgrade makes sense. Too many hacked systems were due to the lack of installing updates. Making it an annual chore for admin along with security updates pushed to the users means that it is more likely to be done.

How much you want to bet that in 6 months after Win 11 is released they change their mind and start releasing major updates every 6 months, They changed their mind about Win 10 will last forever now it's going EOL in 4 years.

Since Win11 security features are aimed directly at corporate and government systems, a once-a-year upgrade makes sense. Too many hacked systems were due to the lack of installing updates. Making it an annual chore for admin along with security updates pushed to the users means that it is more likely to be done.

Eh - three was no real need because there were already things in place to ensure corporate and enterprise IT admins could control when and how updates were deployed to their corp owned machines. They also provide LTSC builds for use in hte corp / ent world anyway, so the only updates IT admins had to worry about were the sec patches, not useless cruft like user experience updates and new features.

Not complaining - I don't mind a year either. I think things will be more polished and less ... buggy.

They are talking about new builds of Win11, I believe. Bug fixes and so on will continue to be addressed through Windows Update, just as they were in Win10, I'd imagine.
