Hi folks, I got the below from my sister in law.
" I turned my laptop on and it was updating. And once it started my start menu and taskbar were gone. I tried restarting and a few other things suggested on the internet but no luck. Any ideas?"

I haven't done any proper troubleshooting in a number of years and wonder what is the best way to help her? She's 10,000 miles away but obviously I cant Team view her if she cant actually start the pc. All I know at the moment is it's Win 11 HP laptop and she cant remember her Microsoft password
.What's the best way to approach this without losing her files?
Thanks chaps

She can attempt to get into recovery options at boot for several recovery options. To do this hold down shift key and keep it down while turning on computer.
She will see the first screen below where she can reset the PC. By selecting advanced options she will see the second screen. From there she can do system restore if she has restore points available.

If this doesn't work one can get into recovery by booting from a usb installation drive.

(Though system restore is not 100% reliable she can try that first. If it fails she can reset PC choosing "keep my files" option. Sshe can also use the same screen to try to uninstall the update though I have never tried this using the recovery environment myself )

Thanks glasskuter, I've sent her those instructions and she's asked me does she need a bitlocker recovery key - I think she got confused by HP's support.
She doesnt need one does she? Or a MS password?
Thanks mate

She wouldn't need either one of these just to perform a recovery :)

I disagree with @JMedlock83 . If you have bitlocked your drive, you have to have the key to reset the PC. You can reset and remove everything without a password but NOT without a bitlocker key. Are you certain she bitlocked her drive? Did she not keep record of password and bitlocker key somewhere?

Possibly, and I do mean possibly, she might could use another device to reset her Microsoft password IF she remembers the answers to her security questions and has access to her two-step verification options (Phone #, email, etc)

If she is able to change her password with MS her bitlocker key is stored in her MS account. Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support

I do not know your sister's level of expertise so if a system restore from recovery options doesn't work, I suggest she take it to a repair shop. Worst case scenario, she will have to have her drive replaced (if she used bitlocker)and windows reinstalled.

Most don't use bitlocker so I'm just going by that. Those that use bitlocker are companies. It's highly doubtful that a lot of normal users like us use bitlocker, unless they have a high business that they run on their computers, but if you run it out of your own home, then there's no need for it. MS just needs to do away with it.

More than you think. I don't use it and never will, but many of the other regulars here do. I know this to be true because we've exchanged our differences of opinion about it. Also some people who do not fully understand bitlocker activate it, but don't understand the ramifications of it and the importance of the key.

I said "most", as in MOST of the world, not just here. . Bitlocker is MOSTLY used by companies, yes, some individuals use it, but the majority are companies.

I agree with @glasskuter. I'm amazed at the number of basic general users who activate Bitlocker because ...
- Windows threw it in their face, so they think it had to be done
- it's trendy to be able to say your device is encrypted (even tho the type of data does not require that level security)
- some misguided belief that it protects the users data from accidental incidents (deletions), and/or is another form of malware protection

You would be wrong there too as many here, including me, actually do use BitLocker.

And I use BitLocker because I chose to, not because "Windows threw it in my face". In fact, I've been using it going back to Windows 7

BTW... Poll-Do you use bitlocker?? ;-)

The latest e-mail from her:
"At every step I was asked for my recovery key but it wouldn't accept the one I got."

I suppose I cant remote in to recovery options? Or is Recovery options not accessible remotely??

That's been an computer-age long-lasting issue with encryption, lose the key and have to start all over or replace what can't be used. For me the first was the failure of the bootable floppy disk with the key that allowed restoring a Colorado Memory tape backup. So No, if she can't get Windows to run there's really nothing that can be done remotely.

If I suggest to her that she re-installs Win 11 from scratch would that be an option or would bitlocker rear it's ugly head?

I'm pretty sure with that problem it would be best to just do a clean install, start over from the beginning. After all, BitLocker is just doing it's job to keep users out.

I also am unfamiliar with Bitlocker itself but have had to deal with other types on occasion. As for the level, encryption is intended to prevent unauthorized access hence the key, some programs have different settings such as for the whole machine, whole Operating System, selected folders or selected files.

A clean install means all of Windows is wiped out including all settings and any data the user has added to the computer. Having a second copy of the data is critical as is having the install media for programs added over time. Bitlocker is preventing access to Windows there's not much that can be done for re-installing/repairing, have to boot to other media such as a DVD drive or a Bootable USB Thumb drive created by using the MCT/Media Creation Tool's process.

One thing about the computer, if it's more than a few years old and comparing to shop time-cost to repair it may be more cost-effective to start with a new computer.

You would be wrong there too as many here, including me, actually do use BitLocker.

And I use BitLocker because I chose to, not because "Windows threw it in my face". In fact, I've been using it going back to Windows 7

BTW... Poll-Do you use bitlocker?? ;-)
I am not talking just about the people here on this forum. . I'm talking about worldwide. . MOST people in the world do NOT use bitlocker. .

This should apply to all brands of drives not just Intel., Before using DISCONNECT ANY SECONDARY DRIVES THAT ARE INSTALLED.

Then you should be able to clean install Windows.

You've got zero evidence the number of users using BitLocker; you're simply posing an opinion based on "your" lack of understanding.

Peace
