Solved not able to run setup.exe from the USB drive

I have a laptop with an Intel i5 7500, 16 GB RAM, SSD with enough avalaible space, Win11 23H2, TPM 2.0, and I'm not able to run setup.exe from the USB drive (created with Rufus 4.6 and latest Win 11 ISO). When I run it it just shows the "Windows" splash screen then it does nothing more. No message, no error in event viewer. I already tried to disable Windows Defender or disable Wi-Fi, nothing helped. Any help would be appreciated!

(I also tried with other ISOs, same issue.

I have tried all known registry hacks, double checked them. Another example: If I force the target version through a registry key, WU stops at 8% with an error code 0x80070002.)

Clean installing 24H2 without getting all cumlative updates slowing you down.

Due to an annoying change in oobe, Windows now automatically downloads all cumulative updates during installation at the oobe phase regardless if using an MS or local account. This can take easily take tens of minutes. The easiest way to avoid that is to create a local account (by your...

Running as Admin and disconnecting the internet when doing an in-place has worked for some.

If someone is trying to run setup.exe from a USB drive it could probably be assessed that they're doing an in-place upgrade from within Windows.
That link from @cereberus is regarding a clean install and Microsoft being sneaky during install.

i agree but it seems even an in-place upgrade with 24H2 using a USB image is still trying to connect and install updates.
so it maybe an idea to follow the advice by cereberus when attempting an in-place upgrade.
not with standing i have had two in-place upgrades fail and have had to resort to clean installs for both systems.

at the very least it would be worth a try if all else has failed.

Yeah for sure. I read a lot of errors in here (I had one of them) that seem to be fixed by disabling the internet during an in place upgrade.
Especially with hardware that Microsoft has added to a Do Not Install On list and are prevented from upgrading to 24H2 due to whatever issues. WD NVMe I think was one of them?

I refuse to believe these omissions are written into the ISO so therefore must be (in my opinion) discluded during an online check.

Even with internet disconnected setup doesn't start at all. The same for "run as admin"

So you’re running Windows 11 (Pro or Home???) and you’re on 21H2, which could have something to do with it. What I don’t know.
Perhaps you need to find a 22H2 ISO and in-place upgrade with that before proceeding to 24H2

Or even a 23H2? I still have a version of 23H2 on my server which I uploaded for a member the other day, if you want the link

Windows 11 home and already 23H2, the only specific thing is that I'm on insider channel in WU.

However I already tried to switch to the main channel and it doesn't matter. Whatever the action, setup doesn't start. I don't understand why :(

(Sorry my specs weren't up-to-date, it's fixed now)

Windows 11 home and already 23H2, the only specific thing is that I'm on insider channel in WU.

However I already tried to switch to the main channel and it doesn't matter. Whatever the action, setup doesn't start. I don't understand why :(

I don’t think you can in place upgrade to a released version of 24H2 when you’re on an insiders? Has to be the same version as what is installed as far as I know?

I don’t think they qualify as the same version. I could be very wrong.

Have you left the insiders channel? Do you know how to?

I have a feeling this is correct.

I really don’t think a release version of 23H2 and an insiders version of 23H2 would be classified as the same version
Therefore Upgrading to 24H2 would be impossible using a released 24H2 ISO.

Don’t quote me as being correct, but I have a feeling I am right.

My Windows version is 22631.4391

To enroll (or switch back to default channel) I'm using the script OfflineInsiderEnroll-2.6.4

I just checked and it seems I didn't re-enroll, so the issue is not the insider enrollment...

I checked the process and it just stops itself, either immediately or if I have some luck and see the "Windows" splashscreen, after about 15s. It never goes further this "step".

No dual boot, I installed Windows 10 a long time ago then upgraded to Windows 11 when it was available. The laptop is 7 years old but still pretty decent and seeing that it has a CPU with SSE4.2 I'd like to update. However it doesn't seem to be working, no matter what I've tried. Can't run setup.exe, and if I force the target version in WU, it fails at 8%.
