In Firefox and in Chrome on Android (just tested on both):
- open the desired page in your browser
- click the three dots menu top right
- choose Add app to startscreen (translated from Dutch)
that option is located at the (almost) lowest position in the menu (on both browsers).

Other tablets I am not familiar with, so if you have another system, please specify.
Better specify the used browser as well.

Mine is a Microsoft Surface Go2 Tablet with Windows 11 in a Firefox Browser - I thought it should have been obvious but I could not see how.

On my normal Windows 11 (Pro) system with Firefox as browser, I make a bookmark of the site I want to have on my desktop and drag that bookmark from the Firefox windows to the desktop.

I am sure you can do it in a similar way, but have no Idea how you would drag something without mouse om a Surface 2 tablet.

No it was not. It was obvious from your system specs you are using a Lenovo Desktop PC with Windows 11 and I supposed the remark "Windows Build/Version 24H2".

I would never have been able to guess from that you have a Microsoft Surface Go2 Tablet with Windows 11 and using a Firefox browser! How could I?

Edit: I see now you have some info about that system in your systems specs of system 2. Even with that I could not have guessed that's a tablet computer. And Firefox is mentioned nowhere at all!

It’s not always obvious. Different browsers behave in different ways, often different settings.

According to Firefox:
In tablet mode on your Surface Pro, you can create a desktop shortcut for a website using Firefox by following these steps:
  1. Open Firefox and Navigate to the Desired Website: Launch Firefox and go to the web page you want to create a shortcut for.
  2. Make Firefox and Desktop Visible: Resize the Firefox window so you can see both the browser window and your desktop simultaneously.
  3. Drag the Website Icon to the Desktop: Click the padlock icon located to the left of the website address (URL) in the address bar.
  4. Create the Shortcut: While still holding down the left mouse button (or using the Surface Pen if desired), drag the padlock icon to the desired location on your desktop and release the button.
  5. Rename (Optional): The shortcut will now be created on your desktop. You can rename it for easier identification by right-clicking (or long-pressing in tablet mode) and selecting "Rename".

No it was not. It was obvious from your system specs you are using a Lenovo Desktop PC with Windows 11 and I supposed the remark "Windows Build/Version 24H2".

Sorry - Obvious to me not anyone else, I meant I also apologise for not making it clear in the opening post that I use a Surface Go2 Tablet, Lenovo Desktop PC and Asus Laptop all with Windows 11. I am a very incompetent person, used to being judged by more competent people than me.

This suggestion by glasskuter is the simplest I believe.
To make it easier, make the Firefox window temporarily smaller so you can see a part of the desktop so as to drag the lock icon to the desktop from the Firefox address bar, Andrew.

If you only have one monitor:
  • Make the Firefox window smaller.
    Top right of Firefox browser
    Win-1766.webp
  • Click on and hold the Padlock icon with your left mouse button in the Firefox address bar at the site you want the bookmark for
  • Drag the padlock onto the desktop and let it go

thanks to all for the suggestions - I have not returned to using that Tablet file yet but I will do so at sometime - I have a few things to experiment with now and thus will mark the query solved.
