Once again cannot share files or folders or printers on my Win 11 with any Win 10 system

As the title says, I have a Windows 11 system with multiple defined shares (entire drives as well as folders and two printers) that are not seen from any of my Windows 10 systems. Always get this:

1654973534500.png

I have checked every setting multiple times, including setting Windows Credentials for both systems on both systems (win 11 and win 10).
Password protected sharing is off, Everyone has access on both systems. Both systems use the same Microsoft account. File and printer sharing is enabled.

This is really stupid to have to go through this over and over and over again. I don't understand why Microsoft can't get it right or at least provided a documented, verified, step by step procedure we users can follow to make network sharing work each and every time.

Why can't the diagnostics tell me what is wrong so I can correct it?

Any suggestions on how to resolve this? It's driving me nuts, especially since I can't print from the Win 10 system as both printers are connected via USB to the Win 11 system. I guess I'll have to make them wireless connections instead but I prefer USB for the scanner functions.

Your connecting to a pc not to a share it should be \\pcname\sharename. Have you set up shares have you set share permission and NTFS what folders have you shared as any in users profile have special permission. Can you ping by name or ip?

Seems like every update results in failure to share.

Don't know what printers you have but I have an HP OfficeJet Pro and an HP LaserJet Pro connected via Ethernet cable to my Wireless Router and can print from any Wired or Wireless computer I install the software on, even access the scanner function. Nice part is no particular computer has to be on. Also have an Ethernet-connected NAS drive for storage accessible by Mapping the Public folder on it.

I gave up a long time ago with the mess of sharing between 10 and 11 where some devices would show up under network on some devices, but would not on others. Now I access my shares strictly by ip address. I pinned shortcuts to quick access.

Your printers should be seen if you installed them on your other devices from the Add printer dialog box, select Select a shared printer by name, and then enter the computer or device name of the primary PC and the share name of the printer using one of these formats:\\computername\printername or http://computername/printername/.printer

Sorry, should have said I am trying to connect via the Network. I can connect to a share if I specify it but I want to be able to double click on the network name of a computer (\\ASCTHRIFTER1 in this case) and see all available shares.

If I enter \\ascthrifter1\er1_c in Network or File Manager then I do get to that share, ditto for any other share (er1_d, er1_documents, era_downloads, er1_users, etc.).

I'm home at right now so can't do any testing.

If I replace \\ASCTHRIFTER1 with the IP address, it makes no difference, get the error message but with the IP ddress showing.

As I said, both are currently setup with a USB connection because it gives me a better scan interface, but that's only on one printer, a Epson 720.
I'll switch them both to WiFi and that should resolve the pribnter problem.

I installed them both by downloading and installing the full printer driver for each. I'll give your suggestion a try if the WiFi connections don't do the job. Thanks

As for my 2 HP printers, during the software installation there are prompts for a choice of connection, USB, Ethernet or Wireless. The process relies upon having no connection to start, not to connect until that choice is made, has always found the networked printer.

I set both up for WiFi and they are accessible from the other computers so that problem is resolved.
Doesn't resolve the problem of not being able to see all shares on ASCTHRIFTER1 via Network.
Still no joy there. Win 11 did something that is causing this but I don't know yet what that is.

OK, so after reading your post, and curious, I found I couldn’t get my Epson 3880 Pro to be seen on the network. Odd since I have Network Printer and sharing turned on (Private Network)

Now let me say I’ve got two Epson printers – one Wi-Fi only (Epson XP-960). The other non-wireless (Epson 3880) and it is directly connected via USB (Epson 3880 Pro) to my main Windows 11 (RTM) desktop PC. The XP-960 being wireless can be see across the network, the 3880 can’t.

Long story short, in order to get the 3880 - 1) seen, and 2) connected, I had to go through this kludgy process so it can be seen on the network and connect to my Windows 11 (insiders) laptop...
  1. Download drivers for shared printer and prepare to install on machine you’re connecting to (Note the "might" not need to be done per step 5 of the linked tutorial below).
  2. Share the printer so that it could be seen on the network.
  3. On the PC you want the printer connected go to File Explorer, Network, click the PC the printer is installed on and click the printer.
  4. While printer is trying to connect and look for drivers, install the drivers you downloaded (again this “may not" need to be done per step 5 of the linked tutorial, but…).
  5. If everything goes well (it did in my case) the printer will show up under "Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners".

Epson-3880---Printers-and-Scanners.jpg >>> Epson-3880-shared.jpg

A bit kludgy but it works as I was able to print a test page. Also restarted the laptop so see if the printer stuck. It did (y)

Anyway, this may not help @Ztruker, as he's found a solution, but it may help others.

Peace

On the PC you want the printer connected go to File Explorer, Network, click the PC the printer is installed on and click the printer.

Problem with this is it doesn't work. I can't connect to the PC the printer is installed on. See my first post in this thread.

In the second device, did you install the printer as I described in post 6? The host device has to be on and not asleep. The usb printer will then be given as one of the choices when you attempt to print. If my instructions aren't clear, try these.

Problem with this is it doesn't work. I can't connect to the PC the printer is installed on. See my first post in this thread.
@Ztruker, so the Windows 11 PC (which has shares) PC can be seen by the Windows 10 PC's, and it's just you have no permission to access them?

As the title says, I have a Windows 11 system with multiple defined shares (entire drives as well as folders and two printers) that are not seen from any of my Windows 10 systems. Always get this:

First things first - If you're using a Microsoft account on the Windows 11 PC, when trying to log in/remote into it make sure you're using those credentials to log in. Also make sure your PC are on the same network (Workgroup) as explained in Brink's tutorial - Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10.

With that this may solve your issue...

1) on the Windows 11 machine open the System Properties app (type system properties in search) and on the "Remote" tab make sure the "Allow remote connections to this computer" box is checked.

2) click the "Select users..." button and when the "Remote Desktop Users" box opens, click "Add". Note: even before adding anything, above the "Add" button should state the owner of the PC (if using a Microsoft account, it will be the email address for the account) "already has access"

View attachment 31686

3) Type in "Administrator" and click "Check Names". You should get the name of the PC follow by \Administrator. Click OK...

View attachment 31690
When you click OK this time, the Remote Desktop Users box should simply say Administrator.

4) Click OK and Reboot the PC, and when you log back in check the Windows 10 PCs to see if the Windows 11 PC can now be seen?

5) "If" you click on the Windows 11 PC and get a "Windows can't access xxx PC". right click it and choose "Connect with Remote Desktop Connection" This acts as a sort of introduction to verify you own the PC. Connect using your credentials to log into the PC. Disconnect. Now the shared files/printers should be seen without needing to remote in again.

Let us know?

Edited to remind (I'm sure you know this, but) .... in order for the PC to be seen it needs to be on and not sleeping.

@Dru2, I'll check this out Monday when I'm in the shop again with one change. I upgraded the Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 today but I still cannot access the Windows 11 computer via Network. I can see it, just not access any of the shares.

I can access all shares on that Windows 11 PC is I setup a link that inclused the share, like \\ascthrifter1\er1_c works fine.

I'll report back Monday. Thanks

If you're talking about post #15, yeah give it a try. It worked for me. In fact I just used it to allow my laptop to be seen by my desktop. The other one is making sure on the PCs are using the same network (workgroup).

Let me know. Thanks :)

I forgot to check this, will do so tomorrow and post back.

Actually, not sure if this applies any more since I upgraded my Win 10 system to Win 11 so now both systems are Win 11. I'll see what applies since I still can't see the same (ascthrifter1) Win 11 system from the other (now Win 11) system (previously Win 10).
