Good day. I prefer to upload or download manually to OneDrive. The sync is disabled. In my attempt to manipulate folders from c:/users/name/onedrive, I have deleted the OneDrive folder including my desktop from my notebook. (Why is the desktop in the OneDrive folder, anyway?) Folders and files seem to remain in OneDrive but I am fearful that they will be permanently deleted.

How can I ensure that the files and folders in OneDrive remain and how can I get a desktop folder back?

Open OneDrive folder.
Right-click the folder you want to restore to default location.
From Location tab, click Restore Default button.

Well, Microsoft includes the desktop as a folder location in onedrive because people have a tendency to create files on their desktop, or place pictures on their desktop that they would rather not lose. Since it's a key component of your user profile, they put it in onedrive so the contents are in both locations.
Folders and files seem to remain in OneDrive but I am fearful that they will be permanently deleted.
They shouldn't be as long as the microsoft account is still present. You should be able to logon to onedrive.live.com, provide the MS username/password combo and see your files. I've had files in OneDrive for nearly 10 years now.

Is your desktop folder in your recycle bin. Can you just right click and choose restore?
