This morning I opened Outlook (I subscribe to Microsoft 365 on the Beta Channel) and a pop up asked me if I wanted to try the 'new Outlook' so I clicked yes thinking it was going to be an updated version. It installed the garbage Outlook Preview app that then became my subscription version so everytime I opened my 365 Outlook it defaulted to the aforementioned garbage preview app.

No big deal I just uninstalled it and my Outlook was back to how it should be, my question is however: Why would it override a premium subscription app with a nasty looking free app?

Didn’t notice any ads, I did notice that it looked like it was designed by a 3 year old

Edwin,

Surely that's not an advert within the Outlook app but an advert in the Inbox of your outlook.com email account itself?

All the best,

Yes it is!

Go figure:

I purchased Outlook as a stand alone program, over top of Office Home & Student, years ago, but, they won't honor that here! 🤷‍♂️

Are you using IMAP for your Outlook program? If so then I agree with you.
I imagine that the Outlook app is using IMAP.

Doesn't matter! Outlook is not my go to anymore, I use Mailbird and eM Client. :p

I was more curious to see if the new Outlook UI was any cleaner!

I have been using the old Outlook for years but since I am not made of money, I canceled 365 and got a cheap Office 2021.
BTW, I took a look at their new Outlook for about 10 mins and promptly uninstalled it.

I must also add that Mailbird is very good. Very intuitive and the UI is well thought of.

I installed it and did a little testing. I use a Gmail account for my main email and it configured it very nicely, but I have a couple quibbles:
  • It does not have the nice ability to create an "Unread Mail" folder that has all unread mail regardless of it being in the Inbox or not. This is one of my favorite features of the MS Office Outlook client.
  • It does not seem to have anyplace to manage a synchronization schedule. I read pieces of mail in various folders that Gmail automatically moves based on rules and hours after I opened them in the "new" Outlook they still show unread in Gmail.

I just tried it and don't like the new Outlook. I couldn't sort to put all my flagged emails at the top of my email list. And it's ugly. I sent feedback telling them as much.

Why'd they have to go and mess with a perfectly good application? Wait. They always do that.

Okay, here it is...
You have to be signed in with your MS account and have a MS 365 subscription!

Guess my mind's made up!!! 🤷‍♂️

Cause it's certainly NOT the "Outlook 365" desktop app....

2023-05-15_02-58-18.jpg

Also, not the outlook.live.com online app. Nor do I get adware there...

They aren't. And I do have "Outlook paid" (subscription) and I certainly don't get adware. Yes, like everyone else who owns an e-amil account, I get the occasional junk mail. but that's junk "e-mailed" to me. Not placed it in the app as adware like that shown above.

Perhaps that's the free email app built into Windows??? That said, if you're using a free/trial version of Office, and not signed in with a Microsoft account, yeah, it probably is likely you'll be adware'd to death.

That's not surprising considering Microsoft is moving "away" from perpetual licenses. So yeah, when you give Outlook 365 a trial run and aren't subscribed.... you're going to get adware. Nothing new there.

However, if you're already a paid subscriber (as I am) and signed into your MS account (as I am), you don't get adware! And I've been using 365 since its inception. And the only "nagware" I'll get is an "e-mail" via my Microsoft account that my subscription is about to end. That's it.

    Other Info
    This is my backup system.
I only have two plugins and both work for me - CompanionLink (a desktop/Android syncing app) and Acrobat. No issues there.
I tried getting the Outlook plugin to work. No luck.
