Outlook account

I have the new version of Outlook, which does not have the "File" option on the top bar, so I cannot set any security settings in that drop-down option. I have tried looking for where I can get this version of Outlook but it seems like although I have a Microsoft account and they charge me an annual fee I cannot get the version that I want. I am trying to do this because the version I have now has very few settings to block unwanted emails such as the huge number of spam ones - even though I have set "Rules" to send most of them with addresses or contents to the junk folder.
The other issue is that a large number of those spam emails are downloaded with a No sender address.
Any ideas as to what to do would be really appreciated.

Are you saying your use Office 365

No glasskuter I created an account with Microsoft when I first loaded my computer with Windows ages ago and if I had known then what I know now I would neve have done that as it is a pain in the neck. What I do get is in the pic when I click on the nine dots on the top bar when Outlook is open. I don't use any of those apps as I use Libree Office for my docs etc.

It looks as you're using the free browser version of Outlook. If you use the store version you do get the same options as the online one. Use the settings icon.
This is the free version of Outlook so puzzled what you are paying for?

If you aren't using Ofc365 then what are they charging you an annual fee for? That makes no sense to me.

Let me put it to you in another way. Look at the 2 scenarios below. Decide which one applies to you.The information for each scenario is devided by the dotted lines.

Scenario #1. If you were previously using the Mail and Calendar apps in WIndows 11 and switched to the new Outlook mail app, as of Dec 2024 the old Mail and Calendar app will no longer work. Therefore you will have to stick with the new Outlook Mail app to handle your mail OR seek another email application that can handle your email. Some users have reported difficulty in switching back to the old Mail app in this interim time that MS has given people the opportunity to switch. Either way, the old Mail app will only work for 3 more months anyway so there is little need to change back to it.

YOU MUST CONSIDER THIS WHEN CHOOSING ANOTHER EMAIL APP TO HANDLE YOUR MICROSOFT EMAIL
To compound the whole Outlook New fiasco, MS is also making OTHER major changes in their hotmail.com. live.com, and outlook.com exchange email accounts in that as of yesterday MS was due to cut off all imap and pop access to these domains since imap and pop mail does not support modern authentification.. Whatever email app you choose to use going forward must be capable of handling this modern authentification change. I know 3rd party Thunderbird can handle it and there may be others I am unaware of. Along with the the Outlook New app, other options that you can use are 365 or 2021 which support modern authentification (account set up as Outlook.com/Exchange Syncing), or outlook.com webmail.
Note: The following versions of Outlook Desktop do not support Modern Authentication for Outlook.com: Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016 MSI, Outlook 2019 LTSC. Any release of Outlook Desktop with a version less than 11601.10000 does not support Modern Authentication for Outlook.com. These applications can no longer be used to handle email from the domains listed above.
How to set up an outlook.com email address in Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird does support Modern Authentication and it is recommended that you ensure you switch to use those settings. Any account that you add to Thunderbird will now automatically setup using the proper settings. You have the following options:

Option 1: Update an existing outlook.com email account-change Current Settings

1. Change Thunderbird's server settings:
   1. Select ≡ > Account Settings.
   2. In the left pane, select Server Settings for your Outlook.com or Hotmail.com account.
   3. For Authentication method, select OAuth2 (instead of Normal password).
      
      
2. Change Thunderbird's authentication method for sending messages (SMTP):
   1. Select ≡ > Account Settings.
   2. In the left pane, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).
   3. In the right pane, select your Microsoft account and then Edit… .
      
      
   4. For Authentication method, select OAuth2 (instead of Normal password).
      
      
   5. Select OK to save your changes.

Option 2: Remove Current Account and Re-Add  OR create a new account in Thunderbird
If you remove your current account from Thunderbird and then re-add it, the proper settings will be detected, and you will just need to sign in to be properly configured with Modern Authentication and the proper server settings.

APPLE MAIL
If you use Apple Mail on your ios devices, it does support modern authentification.
If you use Apple Mail and you are seeing password prompts or connection errors, this is most likely happening because your account got configured as basic authentication. To mitigate the issue, remove the account and add it back as Outlook.com:

1. Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
2. Tap the email account you want to remove from your iPhone, then tap Delete Account. For more information, please go to Add and remove email accounts on iPhone.

Add your account back to Apple Mail:

1. Go to Settings > Mail.
2. Tap Accounts, then tap Add Account.
3. In the Add Account dialog, choose Outlook.com.
   
   

If removing and re-adding the account does not address the issue, do the following:

1. Remove the account again.
2. Go to Settings > Safari, then tap Clear History and Website Data.
3. Reboot your iPhone.
4. Add the account back and proceed through the Outlook.com account sign in flow.

ANY OTHER 3RD PARTY EMAIL APPLICATION -
Always check the add account steps to look for Outlook.com and use it if that option is available. If Outlook.com is not an option, you will want to contact the application's support to confirm that they support Modern Authentication against EAS, POP, IMAP, and SMTP.

SCENARIO #2 If you were previously using Outlook 365 or Outlook 2021 to handle your mail, and you toggled the switch in the upper right corner to "switch to new outlook" this can be reverted back to Outlook Classic. See this thread on MS forum for the solution that worked for me. Redirecting
If it fails to work for you, you can contact 365/2021 support and they can revert back to Outlook Classic for you. They are very good in their support.

I know this is a lot of information and may be as clear as mud, but I've explained all the changes going on the best I can for you and anyone else whose email quits working or who doesn't like the New Outlook.

If you’re “paying” Microsoft, I can only imagine it being for Microsoft 365.
You can check in your Microsoft Account online under “Subscriptions” I believe.

The version of Outlook that comes with Microsoft 365 is most likely called Classic Outlook (or Outlook Classic) as I have recently discovered when connecting to a computer belonging to a member here.

Open taskbar search, type “Outlook” when I did this it showed up as both New Outlook & Outlook Classic. Outlook Classic is what you’re paying for.

Can you do a search for “Outlook” and take a screenshot or photo of the results?
Search from taskbar or the start menu search or you can use the keyboard shortcut Windows logo key + S to open Search

Ok thanks for all of your replies and it looks like I have to dig into this ?Microsoft account that I am being charged $109 annually for which goes by way of a subscription for Microsoft 365 Personal. I shall get back to you all when I get soemthing sorted out.

Hmm well looks like I am stuck with the "New" version as I cannot find any way of getting the "Classic" version back as typing Outlook in search just refers me to the new version app. What I find so annoying is the fact that one cannot block those unsolicited and spam mails as there is no setting in the Outlook settings to do that. Why Microsoft has designed Outlook like it has is frankly so frustrating and I suppose I could use another email client but it means going to all of my usual contacts and reconfiguring how they can contact me and that is one sorry pain in the neck.

Right clicking on an email should give you options.

Cancel your Microsoft 365 subscription. Purchase Office 2021, so far IMO, the best version of Outlook included.

Do you recall toggling the New Outlook to on?

Have you checked the settings icon for the free version?


Though someone with a 365 sub should be able to advise on the paid for Outlook !!!!!

SOLUTION: New Outlook removed "switch back to old outlook" button.

This is for anyone else who no longer sees the button to switch back to the old outlook. I have included step by step photos to get back to the old..

Ok mate I might have a look as my only otion is to chnage email client and I have two others I set up a long time ago.

Did you read scenario #2? I got outlook classic back quite easily.

Not at all, they just contact you the normal way, by sending an email to your email address. They don’t know what email client you use as you don’t know which one they use.

The key is the email address.

Yes well I did but found that help option kind of did soemthing but still hav not got anything back yet. the other stuff I am going to try when I get chance as things here are a tad hectic right now. But I agree with yur comment about MS burying everything real quick when it suits their purpose a bit like that nonsense with the CPU and TPM requirements that one really annoyed the living bejesus out of me but I was glad to find there wre ways around it as my Ivy Bridge build is still a great machine.

Did you actually install Microsoft 365? You should have more than one Outlook when you search if you did, as far as I know.

One is for 365, the other is the standard New Outlook App that comes with Windows 11
