General Pin to Taskbar an App, Drive, File, Folder, or Site in Windows 11

Pin_to_Taskbar_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to pin an app, drive, file, folder, or site to the taskbar for your account in Windows 11.

The taskbar in Windows 11 shows the Start menu, Search, Task View, Widgets, Chat, File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Store buttons (icons) aligned to the center by default.

The taskbar will also show the icon of the app for any window you have open. If you like, you can pin an app to the taskbar to always show the app's icon on the taskbar whether the app is open or not. Pinning an app to the taskbar makes it easier to open the app on demand from the taskbar.

References:

Items you pin to the taskbar are stored and referenced in both locations below for your account.

In the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband

In a folder:
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Whilst the pin Folder to taskbar option works, I would like it work a bit differently. Is there anyway to have it focus on the already opened folder rather than spawning a new instance everytime the icon is clicked?

Hello, and welcome. :alien:

I'm afraid that's a side effect of this workaround to have a folder pinned to the taskbar.

I have a custom shortcut for a setting - it looks like this:

ms-settings:network-proxy

Is there any way to pin this? Right click does not give me that option!
Have you tried dragging it to the taskbar? If you do it, and it works, you can't move or delete the shortcut; pins on the taskbar are actually shortcuts themselves, so if you break the chain...well, it breaks.

Method 9 works for libraries too, thanks again.

I came up with a way to add blank spaces as well.

I created tasks that resync the time (w32tm /resync). You can create as many as you want and just give them different names.

Then I created shortcuts to the tasks. (C:\Windows\System32\schtasks.exe /run /tn "1")

Then I changed the icon to a blank icon. (attached as a zip file)

Then I pinned them to taskbar and delete the original.

If you do accidentaly click one, it will just resync your clock.
