Hello,
i am looking for a (don't know how to put it in better words) more aesthetic look of the desktop icons. I have a bunch of programs that i use regularly and wanted to have them well looking on my desktop. But windows standard doesn't look that good. Also i don't want to have them all in my taskbar. What options do i have?
Oh and btw... Happy new year.

It's hard for us to understand what would be a "pleasant" arrangement in your eyes.
Generally, you should probably UN-check auto arrange, when you right click the desktop and choose View...

Then you can put the icons where you want. You can also UN-check Align to grid if that helps.

Do you have a screenshot that might help us, help you...

To post a screenshot on this forum...

1. Take the screenshot, edit it as desired, save to your desktop as .png or .jpg
2. Left click the mouse in your post, where you want to place the screenshot.
3. Click the Attach Files button at lower left, browse to your pic and click Insert.

If the icons are actually shortcuts to the .exe/executable file it usually works to right-click one and choose Properties then the Change icon button, may have something better.

Yeah.. i guessed this wouldn't be easy... don't let us go to deep into a discussion what's personally pleasent for one (or in this case for me). :)

No it's not the arrangement of the icons in relation to each other on the Desktop.
It is hard for me to describe - but i will try:
I would like to have an area on my desktop, e.g. one third or one fourth that covers the wallpaper from upper to lower end of the screen and serves as some sort of underlayment and at the same time makes it clear that THIS is the section of the Desktop Icons. I dont want to edit wallpapers for this - searching for some kind of widget or something. Man... Never had so much problems to describe what I mean. Hope you get it..

Just keep in mind that the Desktop view is Dynamic, not Static like a picture on the wall. Being Dynamic it is constantly changing or refreshing, usually not see happening, and anything adding into memory can make it change, even to rearranging the icons.

In Windows 11, Microsoft is urging us to use the first page of the Start menu (pinned to START), or the Taskbar.
I think for what you seem to want... "pinned to Start" is what will work for you.

I only have two things pinned to Start, but you can pin a whole bunch of things there (RED box), since 21H2 and 22H2
Anything you right click and choose: Pin to Start will show up in the RED box.
Then, if desired you can move them around till the arrangement suits you.

If I remember correctly, @Edwin has made massive use of icons in the RED box area. Maybe he'll post a pic.

This is where a picture would help. You can take a screen shot of your desktop an dthen use Paint or similar to darw a box where YOU want the icons to be. :-)

There ARE programs out there that give you much more control of your desktop. But to recommend one over the other... we need a pic from you... "showing" us what you want, where.

Like if you wanted all your icons in this area... you can do that with the right click menu on the Desktop...

Image1.png

Like so...

Image1.png

You may have to move the Taskbar to the left to do that...

In other words... I changed the taskbar from center justified to left-justified, then set the desktop View as shown...
Now any new icons I make appear on the left side of the desktop, aligned to a grid and auto arranged.

Like this...

Image1.png

I have a 30" screen.

OK... do the tutorial in post #7, then right click the desktop, choose: Show more options, and set View, like I did.
It might work without the tutorial... you'll have to try it.

Also... this tutorial will get the classic right click context menu back...

Here's the tutorials, a LOT of people ask for...

There's an application from Startdock, called Fences, which I believe will provide what you want to do. I have used it for a long time and found it very useful. You can visit their website for a better idea how looks and functions. I have provided a link to their website below.

Ya know... someone who has a LOT of icons pinned to the Start menu.

If I remember correctly, @Edwin has made massive use of icons in the RED box area. Maybe he'll post a pic.

Boy... I sure wish someone would post a pic of the Start menu "pin to Start menu" page.
Ya know... someone who has a LOT of icons pinned to the Start menu.
Nope! I don't use that menu! Sorry!

Well somebody does... I remeber seeing tons of pics of Start menus bursting with pinned items.
With comments like... Oh, I like the new Start menu... etc.

@r3tr0S1c

There's even a tutorial about it...

It's... it's... almost like Windows 11 has a built in place to put icons.
Once they're pinned to the Start menu... you can just delete them from the desktop. :-)

And... you can even do this...

Hello. Thx for the replies. I am using startallback now and looks good. No icons on the desktop - everything arranged as I like it.

Some wise old sage once wrote "a clean desk is a sign of a sick mind"
I may have read that sometime before I set up my first Windows desktop.
Just like a physical office desk, I want my stapler, scotch tape, pencil holder, telephone, and my in and out boxes right where I can reach them and not have to go looking for them when I need them.

So, I guess I set up my PC Windows likewise.
I start off with a desktop Wallpaper that's easy on the eye. Sort of like a Playboy magazine center fold.
Then arrange my favorite icons down the left side of the screen first, then down the Right side, with my Mailbox, Browser, and AV/AS Software.
And on Win-11, get those dang Taskbar icons out of the middle of the bar and back over to the left where they belong. ;-)
But the first thing I would do, as suggested in earlier posts, shut off "Align to Grid", so you can put the icons exactly where you want them.
Oh heck, let me just show you.
Win 11 Desktop.jpg
The second vertical row on the left is my Outbox, so to speak, things to be filed away. Which I will do later.
And, in my Taskbar, I like things I can do, with one click, even if I have a program like this one open on my screen.
If I click the RED Bullseye next to my Start Button, my PC will be shut down, with all programs closed, in about 5 to 7 seconds.

You're Welcome, I'm glad I could share...
;-)

I don't keep shortcuts or icons on my Desktop..., just the junk I'm workin on!

My wallpaper has to be somber, as well, so I can see the junk I'm workin on!

I hate icons on the desktop and don't display any but that's my odd preference I guess. Taskbar and Start Menu only for me.
