It's Christmastime and Windows 11 time. I've had quite a few people ask me for suggestions on what laptop they should buy. Buyer are sucked in with thoughts of more speed, more cores, more threads, etc, etc. As we see here on this forum, heat issues are becoming more and more prevalent as CPU's have become faster. When you add that in with the fact that builds these days seem to have dropped in quality, in terms of longevity alone I've always felt it is a bad idea to pay big bucks for laptops with high performance CPUs since there's not much a user can do to control the heat inside the case. Since many of you know much more about such things than I do, what do you think? I value your opinion.

I prefer the fastest, but also the smallest. It is a laptop, so portability is most important, and it can never beat a desktop!

Like with medicine, there is no standard prescription.

One has to buy based on individual requirements.

@TheMystic I got the Area 51m R2 laptop and it is far more powerful than any of the desktops we Have look at the specs for system 1. The disadvantage with it is its weight at 3.87Kg and it has two power supplies of which one is the size of a house brick. As it sits on the desktop all the time it is not a problem, and better for me as the screen size suits my eyes

That is a mini-Desktop. Pretty sure you can build a Desktop that will beat it.

At some point, I too was in the same boat as you, wanting to buy the biggest and fastest.

Now, priorities have changed (for the good) where practicality is the most important consideration.

A laptop should be:

1. Lightweight (easy to carry, fit into smallest baggage, etc.)
2. Should be just powerful enough to get the work done. I prefer the i5 over i7 now. It is fast enough, and at the same time runs much cooler and quieter.

Those are my priorities now. Unless someone has a very specific requirement, and that is rare, one should give the above two considerations topmost priority IMHO.

My two nearly new laptops, bought to be W11 compatible, have quite different purposes.

For my System One with its modest AMD Athlon Silver 3050U the main use is to store all my personal files, organise my photos, and some general browsing. Large storage capacity was much more of a priority than sheer speed.

My System Three however (all right, I know John hasn't made a space for more that two specs, so I put it in 'other info') that one runs all my VMs and needs ever bit of its 10th gen i7-10610U's processing power. Just for fun I tried it running 10 VMs simultaneously

But for general browsing use, there's really not much to choose between them. The both run Windows 11 more than well enough.

10 VMs all at the same time.png

@TheMystic Good points there, everyone's needs are different, I use mine as a desktop but have the option of portability if I need it. Now I am retired I don't need it for work anymore and I didn't want a separate monitor etc which goes with a desktop, if I want one I just got to spin the chair around to the other desk. basically, it suits my needs. I must say it does run hot though

Guess I'm kinda of a believer you can't have to much of a good thing, speed, power, RAM, disk size etc. Plus it gives you a little future proofing. I use my 17" M17 R3 as a desktop machine and never unplug it so not concerned about the short battery life of using it as a laptop. I like the compact size, features and it's looks for my desktop machine. For portability my 13.5" Surface laptop meets those requirements as it's easy to carry around and for routine task is just as fast. Both are i7 processors since that's plenty for my needs and I was concerned the i9's might run to hot.

Hi,
Doubt I'd consider a Intel laptop seeing most are thermal disasters.

I prefer the i5
Yes, I agree and that's what I've suggested to most everyone who have asked. I feel the i5 to be the sweet spot, enough speed to do most things and less heat. And for a few little old ladies who don't do much, I've told them to get an i3. I keep my mouth shut about gaming rigs that kids can overclock (both laptops and PCs). It's not worth losing friends over when their kids overclock and fry them.

I was curious so i had to look, my 10700k runs hot on air in a tower setup, so surely a more powerful 10900k would blow the roof off it, However on further looking i believe it is a 10900 non K that comes in that laptop that runs at 2.8ghz stock with a boost of 5.2 which im gonna assume is on one core?
Id be really interested to see the temps of that cpu under 100% at both the 2.8 clocks and under full clocks.
Also most laptops GPU's are lesser specced than theyre full variant equivalent but im not sure whether this is the case with all so i'd be interested to know where that 2080 benches, Ive seen loads of cards in laptops that are like 3080's but only really deliver 3060ti/3070 performance of the full variant. Some of these say things like Max Q etc so im not sure if thats a specific slim version in terms of performance

Hi,
AMD prices are crazy atm pretty much why I haven't got a new laptop yet.

Intel are usually cheaper but thermally are crap people just don't realize it until they get it and ask if they should return it :zany:

Ive been intel for ages, But some people are ridiculous when it comes to brand loyalty, Next time im upgrading, Its whoever has the best at the time, if thats amd then cool, if its intel, also cool xD
If an intel fanboy(Not every user ofc) sees the new amd cpu outperforming intels, its immediate butthurt, and vice versa.
They do seem to run a bit hotter than they used to, If i was doing another intel build id just get the noctua air cooler at the v least, My CM does the job but i dont really like it sitting under max loads at nearly 90 degrees xD Bare in mind i am running at 5.1ghz too.
