Solved Power Start Menu = (Activity from Author)

Update 04.21.24: Author was active on github today.

It's still for sale on the Microsoft store but there's been no activity from the author since Aug 14, 2023.

I don't like the Win 11 start menu but for me it's must less frustrating to just live with it then it is to constantly fight Microsoft over it. Advertising is however something I will make every effort to block. "Reccomendations" is just advertising in BS. I just want to remove that one section, the rest can just stay as-is.

I don't like acquiescing to extortion but a one time fee of $5? I can live with that but, I don't want to buy something that is going to stop working with the next big windows update.

That's another problem. No I do not want an 'old' menu. All the different tools seem focused on win 7 or even 3.1.

Given a choice I'd have my win 10 menu back. I liked it. I miss it

At this point, I recommend Explorer Patcher or All Start Back if you want the Windows 10 menu/taskbar back.

No, no "reccomendations". Reccomendations are ads by a different name. I don't like, need, nor want M.$ suggesting what I should do or think or like.

Those fall under the "Fight with M.$ over it".

Those already cause issues and will cause even more soon. M.$ is going to start blocking updates for people using them.

I don't want to overhaul the whole thing, I just want one single thing removed or hidden. "Reccomendations". Nothing more, nothing less.

And most of all, I don't want it to break over and over.

Power Start Menu can do that but I'm concerned with the lack of activity from the author.

If you'd like to get back the Win10 startmenu, you could try Start11 of Stardock. They have the Win10 startmenu in their options.

You can download it here. After installing it, it comes with a screen that asks for an emailadress give you a licence for a month test period. After that period you'll have to pay $12,00 for one licence or $18 for 5 licences to stay using the program. It hads capabilities to change the taskbar as well (hight, color and any other things).

As far as I know until now, MS is not intending to block Start11 in future, as they have done with StartAllBack and ExplorerPatcher. But you never know. But that is also the case for 'Power Start Menu'. But that app you can't even try for free!

But MS breaks EP with every update, and that's exactly what @Sqrly is trying to avoid with a mod of the Start menu. So far, in two years of using Power Start Menu, without Explorer Patcher, Start11, or StartAllBack, I've not had a hitch with PSM. I don't actually think he's abandoned it at all. He's just waiting for bug reports before he changes anything, and checking on Github tells me he's not receiving any lately. Not fixing what ain't broke is a good policy.

I also looked at that after reading this thread. People are obviously happy with how it’s running. Constant updates isn’t a good sign, no updates is a good one IMO.

Plus One for that position! I have it the way I want it, with everything else either on the taskbar or in All Apps in folders. Works well for me now that I'm accustomed to it.

No, what makes you think it might? Make sure they are “Shortcuts” though and not the executables.

You could also consider looking at Stardock Fences:

I wonder if maybe it can affect the performance of the PC.
I've already tried Stardock Fences and others, but it didn't totally convince me.
