I've saved a PPT presentation with 26 pictures. Now when I try to retrieve one I get blank frames and the message "Picture can't be displayed". I've included the right-click menu superimposed on my copy of slides.

What happened and what can I try to get the pictures?

you can find some official solutions by searching "powerpoint the picture can't be displayed" but I have a better idea
select save as and save your ppt in another directory
then rename it and change the format from "pptx" to "zip" then unzip it using for example winrar or 7zip
then open the extracted files and find your pictures
I think they are in a folder called "media"

Hi, I am assuming you have placed it onto a different computer as to where you created it?
If so maybe the images weren't embedded and were just symbolic links to images.

PowerPoint can either embed images directly into the presentation file or link to them externally. If linked and the original file is moved, deleted or the path is broken, the image will not display on another computer. When inserting images, choose to embed them rather than link them.

It’s been years since I created anything in Powerpoint. To keep Powerpoint files to a minimum size, I would create a folder structure so the images could always remain linked. Then the top most folder would be transported so that the structure is always the same and the images can remain linked.

I tried the solutions suggested by Sheikh and antspants without success. Possibly I didn't follow instructions precisely. Nonetheless I decided to simply redo the PPT presentation rather than to spend more time and effort on this. I'll mark this query closed.

In case it helps someone else: you may have inserted a 'linked' file, which for some reason is no longer visible (on a different drive, networked etc). With my version of PP (2010) there seems to be no easy way to tell if a picture is linked, but selecting File>Info>Show all properties reveals (if there are any linked files) an extra option to 'edit links to files'.

If, by that, you mean 'someone already said that', then all I can say is that I could find no info in this thread about how to find out if any pictures were linked.

I don't know which post(s) contain the links that you refer to.
  • If it's my OP I'm able to click on the image and it delivers a rendition of the original.
  • If you click on the names in my Wednesday at 12:38 AM post "suggested by Sheikh and antspants" You are correct. Those names are "linked" but not to new information.
I was lazy and didn't read the names and spell them to my post. I did a cut-and-paste. Clicking on the linked names produces info on the contributors. Not to their innate knowledge on the subject matter.

No, you misunderstand me: I was referring to the images in the Powerpoint file, which may be linked to the source files, which at the time were somewhere on your PC (or visible some other way, eg over a network or external drive). You need to open PP and find out where those linked files were - or simply copy them in again, this time avoiding inserting a link. Of course, it is possible you didn't insert links, in which case my guess is wrong.

The problem is that links in a PowerPoint presentation are absolute. That result is that if you move the presentations to another location the links will be broken if the original location is not available.

I used to make presentations and found this out the hard way. The solution was to export the presentation. Here is how that is done in PowerPoint 2021. Don't be confused by "CD". The package created can be put on any media or any location on your computer or any other computer.

Here is an example I have. If I run the Smartphone Tech.pptx at the location it was created then the mp4 videos will launch and play fine. However, if I move the Smartphone Tech.pptx and the mp4 videos to another computer then there will be a problem. If I run the Smartphone Tech.pptx and try to play the videos in it then they will not play. That is because in the presentation they are still linked to the original location.

At the original location when I Export the presentation a folder called PresentationCD is created.

Here is the contents of the folder PresentationCD. I can move this folder anywhere. If I run the Smartphone Tech.pptx in it then the mp4 videos will launch and play fine.

@lbeck Would you mind clarifying this? Did you insert the pictures in the presentation or did you insert links to the pictures in them?

If you inserted pictures then you can move the presentation anywhere. The the pictures will always be visible. However, if inserted links to the pictures and you moved the presentation then that may not be true.

I found that if I export the presentation then it does not matter whether the pictures are inserted or the links to them are. I can move the export folder anywhere.

I do not think the issue is links, at least not if the PP behaviour is the same as my 2010: when a linked picture is unavailable, I see this message:

You are right. That is what I get also. That is a different message than what the OP was showing in post #1.

@lbeck Did redoing the presentation solve the problem?

It seems worth continuing with this, as I have found many examples of the problem on the web, but no solutions yet: One suggestion was to open the file using an option I have never noticed before: Get PPT open but problem file not loaded, then select File>Open, locate the file and then select 'open & repair' from the drop-down menu:
pp open.webp

Let us know if that does anything - I have never used it. Martin
