I just finished installing it and I like how you can set it to update via WU.

I may be doing something wrong because I always mark that update thru WU and it never shows up, I always need to download and install it myself.

When you install from the .msi, there's another choice just above or below that "through WU" choice, and it's selected by default. Did you by any chance deselect that? If not, PS should take care of updating itself, and you won't see it in WU at all.

Well, sir, my guess, based more on vaguely remembered instances and limited experience than anything else, is that a day or three after you see S. Brink’s announcement here that there’s a new version, you can open the Terminal window to PS and you’ll see the new version number in the first line. If memory serves, and it often doesn’t, it takes at least two days for it to catch up.

How do I tell what version of PS I have by default?

edit: just run this commend

$PSVersionTable.PSVersion

I still have v5 - why does MS not update this automatically?

I have no idea why that is the case. It's supposed to work. But then, it's Windows, so sometimes the supposed-to's aren't the DO's.
