Prevent the "new" tag from showing up in the start menu

Is there a way to prevent the "new" tag from showing up in the start menu in Windows 11 every time a program is installed?

I was hoping this one would, as it was the only thing I could see that remotely applied. However, had a feeling this might not work, and there is nothing in all the tutorials that actually specifically mentions this issue.

Makes me wonder if there is not real way to avoid it.

What I normally do to get rid of the 'new' tag is to simply right click on any item with a new tag, that makes it go away every time - but if you're installing a ton of new software, that is also very cumbersome.

That's precisely what I do but it's annoying having to do it every time like you said.

No idea there. I suspect one of the 3rd party modding / customization apps will figure it out eventually, if they haven't already....

I was told in another forum that I need the ID (whatever that is) and vivetool but once it gets released mainstream there's no way to disable it. What does "mainstream" mean in this context? Ia he saying the "System" label can only be removed before installing Windows 11? If so, what about system apps that are installed after installing it? It seems vivetool can remove the "New" start menu tag as well.

In this context, that person is stating (with some relevant level of confidence) that, currently, this is a 'feature' that is removable, but at some point it will be baked into the OS and there won't be an easy way to remove it, if there is a way at all. Mainstream in this context is being used to differentiate between a new feature that is available but can be disabled by ViveTool, so, for all intents and purposes, a hidden setting allows enabling or disabling, like with Beta builds of Windows with new features that you can turn on / off. Mainstream is simply that - not in testing but in production, so, think of how Windows Explorer is baked in to Windows - you can get 3rd party apps to run in place of Windows Explorer, and you can even have them associated with the Win key + E shortcut, Windows Explorer is always there, even if not running, and not easily removable.

But how can the user know there won't be a way to remove it in the future? Is it just an assumption?

part. Unless they are an employee of Microsoft, I doubt they know for a fact that this is going to be permanent, and are more than likely making an assumption.

But I thought "mainstream" in this context meant after Windows 11 23H2 was publicly released, when it already had been at the time that user said it.

Although 23H2 may be released, this actual feature is relatively new, and thus still (probably, I don't know this for sure) is still a feature that can be disabled, so that may be the entire basis of their comment.

Again, unless they have other knowledge they are not sharing, I suspect they are making assumptions.

I get that, I simply don't understand his notion of "mainstream" when 23H2 was publicly released, not only in the IP channels.

It's not the OS version being mainstream that he is referring to - it is this exact feature being mainstream. That's what I meant by

I guess he was referring to the feature and not to the OS version as well but I don't think they are separate things since the former is available day one since the latter was publicly released.

That is also something that we really don't know, and is another assumption - that they are tied together, the feature and the OS version.

FWIW, I have had 23H2 only since yesterday. I've had that system dialog for much longer, so in my eyes, they are not necessarily or inherently tied to each other.

I think that only goes for the "New" tag, and unfortunately, it (as well as the "System" label) seems it can only be removed after installing a program, anyway (at least the "New" tags can be removed by right-clicking the apps that have it).

Well, there is 23H2, and there are the enablement packages, the prerequisite KB packages for 23H2, the optional KB packages for 22H2, etc.

I never really looked into it, but I suspect that it is a feature that was expected to go live with 23H2 back when 23H2 was planned to come out - last month. When it got delayed, I think that some of us got early access to some of these things (Co-Pilot, too, which IIRC came out late September for me on 22H2 RTM?) because of those enablement packages and optional / prerequisite KBs that that I would go ahead and install.

Let's just say this - 23H2 and the features that were supposed to be specific to it became one really big hot mess when it was delayed lol.
