Problems with icons and thumbnails

At some point, after updating to Windows 11 my Explorer Picture app now only shows icons with occasional thumbnails. I have done all the recommended things (going to Advanced System Properties, Performance, and ticked the appropriate boxes) and checked my display drivers are up to date, but still no improvement. Can any one help? I know earlier versions of Windows 11 performed correctly and gave me thumbnails for all my images.

If your pictures default folder location is onedrive, it can cause this problem. It is a very easy option to miss when installing or upgrading windows. Right click on pictures folder, select properties, click location tab. What is the default location? If your pictures folder is defaulting to onedrive, then your other user folders are probably doing so as well. You can verify this by clicking on each personal folder and selecting properties. Here's how to move any or all of your personal folders back to your C: drive.

First, Unlink PC from Onedrive In task tray, click Onedrive icon. Click gear icon to get into Onedrive Settings. Under Account tab, select "Unlink this PC"
under Settings tab - Uncheck start Onedrive automatically with Windows.


To move your folders and all the files back to your user folder on your C: drive, use Option 2 in Brink's tutorials.







After you get your folders moved, if you want to use onedrive to backup any of your personal folders, you can open onedrive settings gear icon, settings tab, check 'start onedrive automatically when I sign in to Windows." Under account tab select 'choose folders'. Check each folder you want to backup to onedrive.
